Cod4 on steam vs retail Cod4, differences?

I love steam, Im sick of losing all my CD and consequently have no back catalog of retail games. For example I have bought every total war game released yet dont have a complete set of CD keys for any. I looked on the sega web site about this and it basically says if you lose/break it then buy a new one. Where as I have HL games going back 10 years now. Another example, I got crisis a few months ago. I havent lost the cd key for this but my wife has stuck it in a random box, and when I sit down at the PC I dont want to waste my limited free time diggin around trying to find it. If crisis was on steam I wouldnt have had this problem..

i'm actually thinking of getting Bioshock on steam, due to the no cd, and reduced securom issues. As well as Assasin's Creed and CoD4... wish they let you register more games from retail keys, though

That is the obvious reason from Valves standpoint, HOWEVER, if they did allow it (What with them announcing Steamworks is now free) it may generate a LOT of business their way.
The Steam community features are great.
You have the choice. It's not cheek, they want a certain amount for it, you want to pay a certain amount for it, if these 2 values are relatively close to each other, a sale is made... Works for most things
It didnt really bother me, but the few quid more i spent on it saved me half a days time in going to town (not enough free time as it is with work), navigating the crowds of mindless morons and having yet another box, manual and CD laying around, i can also download/copy the steam directory whenever i need to. The state of game manuals these days is crap, especially FPS' and even more so those focused on MP. Some you only get a reference sheet of commands, which you normally change in the options anyway.
Steam aren't the one's charging you more. Steam don't decide the price that CoD4 sells at. Activision do - and, seeing as Activision have a deal with Amazon, they're not going to sell it *cheaper* on Steam.
I wish people would stop Steam-bashing when quoting prices - it's the Publisher that decides the inflated price.
And, how are you getting less? You don't get a manual - whoop-de-do. Pro-tip: press Mouse1, it's an FPS. You do, however, get automatic updates and the ability to use your game on multiple computers without the install media.
The last time I got a deecent manual with a game was Grand Prix on the Amiga, nowadays it is just a stinky A5 leaflet if your lucky which is a waste of tree.
It is the devs who make the patches not Valve, what is your point? Valve dont hold onto patches just to annoy people.
But it is valves responsibility to push it out over steam, which isn't a 2 second process, presumably they must update steam with new checksums so it can make sure the local content is as it should be.
Direct 2 drive charges only $49.95, where as Steam demands $69.99. I don't know what's going on at Steam, perhaps they take a large portion of the profits. Maybe Activision just thought they could get away with it on the worlds most popular digital distribution software. Whatever it is, they are taking advantage of us. It has happened to every single 3rd party game I have personally researched.
It is the one issue with what is otherwise a fantastic system.

Official Valve products aren't too bad (still cheaper at retail), but 3rd party pricing is often pretty bad. Let me point out again that COD4 on Direct 2 Drive costs $49.95 yet it is still going for $69.99 on Steam. It may or may not have anything to do with Valve, but that doesn't change the fact that games are sometimes overpriced on Steam, so it might have something to do with Valve. I'm not blaming any company in particular (because I don't know whose fault it is), but Steam is sometimes over priced, that is the problem.
