Cod4 PC Server refresh internet drop

Hi guys,
I wonder if anyone can help me,
Ive only had cod 4 on pc for a few weeks because my friend gave it to me for free (no not a illegal copy, fully legit version)
After i installed it i patched it up to the last version i could find (1.7) and booted it up.
The menus worked fine and everything but as soon as i hit refresh server list, it picks up loads of servers but then my connection just dies and i have to turn off my router and turn it back on again to get any connection.
I dont know what it is that is happening, i played it on 1.1 and it worked fine so i dont know what happened in the 1.7 patch but i think it ****ed up the way it looks for servers.
As i said before my mate gave it me so i havent got the disk, otherwise i would just have reinstalled.
ISP-Virgin Media 100MB
Router-Standard Virgin media Super Hub

This is due to either the router NAT table getting flooded out or the router having over agressive DDOS protection. There is a command in many flavors of the game to make it fetch the server list a little slower to avoid it but I've got a feeling there isn't such a command for COD4 itself :(
 
No i dont lack google-fu (whatever the hell that is), that thread doesnt resolve anything im on windows 7 not linux and i would just plug in a different router but virgin media use the what i think is the coaxial cable to plug into the router (big white cable)
 
Reinstalling won't help if its the UDP flood killing his connection, later COD games have a cvar you can change to slow it down but I can't find one for COD4.
