Just play with all the weapons till you find one you like, I use the G3 as i like the slower fire rate. My house mate who has just started to play the game likes the M16. If you want kills camp it out a bit, its by far the best way when you are starting out.

The most important thing in most FPS games is to know the maps really well, learn the spawn points and bottlenecks then just blast people. In my opinion anyway. Also use the radar.

This really helps and is solid advice for all FPS.

In CoD4 it's very hard to give general advice on weapon setups as these vary massively depending on what game type you're playing and also if your on Harcore mode or not.

I generally stick to Search & Destroy, non-HC and for assaulting on the smaller maps, I've taken to using the M1014 Shottie, Bomb Squad, Stopping Power and Extreme Conditioning. Being able to charge around like a loon from the off is pretty good and Shotguns, if used correctly, can be very effective.

I also use the same setup in defence except I use c4 and Juggernaut.

The M60E4 with a scope is also pretty fun!
