PC spec. added at end (thanks for pointing out that I missed this off)

Since getting a new PC (Windows 7) many of my video files stutter and stammer (so to speak), and don't play smoothly. Currently I have the Windows 7 Codec Pack installed, as well as the latest DivX. Generally, I use Media Player Classic or VLC Player. If anyone knows of a kind of miracle codec solution I would be forever indebted to them. Thanks for reading this post.

PC is a basic OcUK Titan with a few improvements inc. AMD Dual 3.00 GHz, 8.00 GB RAM (1600MHz), 2TB Hard Drive

My old PC did play all of these files fine, so I doubt it is the spec. - However, that machine went kaput, so I can't find out what I had on it (whatever it was that I don't have on this one)

Thanks for the responses so far - I'll get cracking on them

spec of pc might be useful as I use shark007 (edit) codecs (edit) and I can play 1080p (mkv downloads) on my amd x2 4200+ with ati hd5450.... yes it nearly maxes out the cpu but it can do it lol.

What CPU
What GPU
What codec
What resolution

More info needed

KLite will not help you in VLC -as already stated it uses its own internal codecs

Definitely need system specs as VLC shouldnt need any external codecs to play any file (at least it never did when I used it).

Would also be interesting to know the level of quality for the videos. I could watch peep show in 720p on my slow notebook using VLC absolutely fine.

use media player classic home cinema

I use a weird combination of codecs for best performance but it might be too complicated for ya ;)

-media player classic home cinema for player disable all internal filters and audio switcher
-ffdshow tryouts (set xvid, divx etc to xvid in video codecs section) set x264 to ffmpeg.
-xivd (latest)
-madvr for renderer (set mpc hc renderer to madvr)
-haali media splitter

:D

If you want to bitstream dts and dolby through hdmi or spdif, in ffdshow-tryouts audio options enable the bitstream passthrough on output tab. If you have problems with DTS passthrough, install ac3filter.

Thanks for that (a while ago, I know).
Although far from an expert, I prefer to have a go at a possible solution that is quite tricky than have a massive list of useless non-solutions that are no-brainers.
So your tweeks were (and are) very much appreciated.

Need more information really. Which files is it that are not playing properly? 720p? 1080i? Which graphics card is installed? And what is the CPU utilisation when playing those files?
