codecs loading on startup

do I really need codecs to load on startup or can I remove them from my registry?

Codecs shouldn't need to run at startup.

If you have Windows 7 Installed you won't even need codecs.

The only ones I have installed are:

Haali Media Splitter (for MKVs)
CoreAVC (For CUDA Acceleration)
FFDSHOW (For DTS)
AC3Filter (For HDMI, SPDIF through PCM)

Anything else shouldn't be needed.

^^ Summed it up well, you shouldn't need many codecs if you're on Windows 7 (which you may well not be, so say), but with the ones mentioned above, you can configure and optimise your viewing, which is good for low spec machines and people who want things to fiddle with. :)

Alternatively you could install VLC Media Player and not worry about any codecs at all.

thanks - I use windows media player classic light plus some external codecs.

been clearing out my registry and a LOAD of codecs are in my startup (I am using winxp32 - still need to upgrade!!!). Looks like I will get removing........

i found LOADs believe it or not............can't list them now cos i am not at my PC but there were at least 20 from windows media player classic k-lite, which is annoying cos i took them off and the player wouldn't work anymore :(

As I said uninstall all the crap you have and get MPC-HC from the link I posted. It uses all its own internal codecs/source filters so it doesn't depend on anything else. Actually you might want to delete your MPC settings, if you get the installer version it has an option for this otherwise it's in the registry.

Why are you 'cleaning out' your registry?
Its a good way to stop things working, rather than actually make anything remotely more efficient.
Startup programs are different to the registry.

What exactly did you do to 'clean it'?

honestly they are there and when I disable them (around 20) the media player doesn't work........

well i had a malware thingy and one thing turned to another - don't worry i'm not removing EVERYTHING, mostly doing stuff on startup but it is still part of the registry :p

Sounds like you have little to no idea what you are at.
If malware is the problem, remove the malware and leave the codecs alone.
If the codecs are the malware, and you can't remove it, then removing chunks of the registry isn't going to help you in the slightest. Just format start again, a fresh sheet, and don't visit russian sites anymore.

the malware is gone but i am bored and after checking my startup items decided I would remove some :)

about the russians if you had read the whole thread you would know what I was on about..............

alright guys i'm gonna drop this thread but thanks for all the advice! much appreciated!
