codecs - where?

Yep... CCCP is the best codec pack out there... it has all the good stuff with no adverts or anything either.

I like to control what codecs are installed and update them individually when they are updated by the maker or open source community :p

With this in mind I have the following setup which I have found to be 100% failsafe and uber quality (especially for Quicktime HD trailers and x264/h264 HD movies)

- Official DiVX codec (for the web player so I can watch stuff on redcurtain/alluc etc)
- AC3 ACM decoder (for conversion purposes)
- WinDVD just installed and not used (the video decoder by intervideo I find most smooth for DVD playback, the AC3 filter in MPC also kicks ass for this)
- Matroska Pack Lite for MKV container translation
- FFDSHOW just enabling decoders for x264/h264 (quicktime hd and x264 hd movies)
- CoreAAC to decode the AAC audio stream in quicktime files
- QTLite (for embedded quicktime content and the HD donwloader plugin for your browser)

It does look like a lot ot manage but it's a foolproof system and you know exactly what's being installed and what programs are using it. I used to use the codec packs in the past but just got fed up with some apps decoding content with one codec when it should be another and so on.

mrk - Do you not use Real Alternative? Or don't you bother with Real media? And can I ask why you use QTLite and not QuicktimeAlternative? Not having a go (or am I? :p) but just wondering what the advantages of QTLite are, if any, over QA. :)

QTLITE replaced QA as QA stopped development :p

I have RA installed too but since installing it have yet to visit a site with Real media...lmao :p

Aha bugger me it's now merged as one, I swear it was 2 diff things before!

There a variant of QuickTime Alternative called QT Lite. The ONLY difference between the two packs is that QT Lite does not contain Media Player Classic.

Yeah I use QTlite, already have a customised version of MPC so no need for a bundled one :p
