hai guyz!

Right, was looking around sainsburys earlier and quite fancy myself a coffee machine for the new place! :)

I want one that does Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocs...I found a Tassimo one for £120 which seemed pretty snazzy...no idea if it'll last 5 seconds or not though.

Can anyone recommend one at all? Comment on the Tassimo brand?

Cheers :)

Monserrat I didn't even mention espresso?

I just want a one button and coffee appears kinda thing. And I don't want it to break in 5 minutes either.

They are pretty good but are expensive.

A coffee will cost about 20p without milk before you take into account the cost of the machine.

In comparison a teabag costs 3p (assuming you pay £2.50 for 80).

Check out siliconslave's how to make an espresso thread for lots of recommendations.

The general consensus I think is that if you're spending less than £300, an espresso machine won't be very good. My experience echoes that! What you say you're after is something a bit different though, I think it'd be good to hear from someone with something similar. I think the cost of the pods etc for those machines is high.

Gaggia is the brand that gets most branded around, what your buying isn't really a coffee machine its something that pours hot water through a pod and gives you something vaguely resembling coffee. only my opinion of course.

I was given one as a freebie.

They are OK for what they are, the coffee tastes pretty realistic but I'm not an expert here. On no account get the 'milk' (UHT) discs, they taste foul.
They are convenient for making one-off coffees, but cleaning is fiddly and the tabs are expensive for what it does, but then on a Sunday morning you may just feel like going back to bed rather than stand there boiling kettles.

If I was buying one, I'd get one that grinds the beans just before making, I think they do taste a bit nicer. I also prefer a hot chocolate made with milk.

Suits me, my mates taseo one is fine, and that wasn't expensive. I've only been drinking it 6 months so it all tastes much the same to me :)

Will check Gaggia out, cheers! :)

I got a Tassimo T65 for Christmas, it's brilliant. I'm not a coffee connoisseur or anything by any standard but I can appreciate a decent one, and the Tassimo does make very nice drinks. Very simple to use, very easy to clean (essentially cleans itself internally), plus you get a £20 voucher to use on the Tassimo online store to get you started with some T-Discs, so it's rather good value.

The discs themselves aren't particularly cheap, but they're not stupidly expensive either as long as you're not using it several times a day. I tend to just use it on my days off work; means I'm getting use out of it but it's not costing me the earth in discs.

Mine was about £96 in November so you should still be able to find it for about that price. The T65 has a built-in Brita Maxtra water filter whereas the others don't.

Cheers pal, its £140 on their site...I'll have a hunt around, looks pretty good :)

Noob time, do you need specific sized mugs?

Not really; smaller ones are better because, when all said and done, the servings you get aren't particularly massive for most of them so a massive mug isn't going to be anywhere near full unless you use two discs. You can top your drink up by holding the button down, but do it too much and you just end up diluting it. You quickly learn how much 'extra' you can get from a disc though.

Any size will fit in the machine though, the base bit comes out to allow tall mugs, and has a bit that raises for smaller mugs so they're closer to the nozzle.

I actually managed to score a half-decent mug set from work that came with an old Dolce Gusto machine that we'd sent back ages ago. Rather handily they 'fit' any serving of any disc (i.e. not too big or small), quite a good freebie really.

If you do go for one, I'd advise getting some extra milk discs , particularly if you go for any of the standard coffees (assuming you have milk with coffee of course). The speciality cappuccinos etc come with milk discs in the pack, but the normal ones don't. You can use normal milk if you want, but it's nice to have the Tassimo do the whole thing. Depends on your preference though.
