Coil Whine is a Problem for Everyone

My card whines like a bitch on her ****ing period and guess what. I dont care because i wear headphones instead of plastering my ear to the sidepanel and listen for coil whining.

None of my 290 cards have had any coil whine, however my Kaveri 7600 APU laptop has some coil whine. :D

Why do we hear more about issues on NV cards now? Because they sell more that's why.

our supply-chain conversations indicate that NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 980/970 has comprised over 80% of high-end card shipments to channel partners since mid-September.

over 80%. OVER.

Percentages for the problems occuring might as well be the same between two cards but the one that sells many times as many will get many times the complaints. Simple as that really.

I don't have an issue with AMD contacting the press about issues their competitor might have but I do take issue with the fact that they apparently provided nothing to prove that the competing cards are affected worse than their own models. If you're going to complain about something then you better have the proof for the complaint. And with the whole "g-sync creates latency", "there are no gameworks samples and devs can't get source" and now this AMD has been quite bad at providing the proof. But yes, if you can prove it then go ahead, I don't have an issue.

Off-topic but i thought id show people because ive never really done it before.

Here's my rig guys, yes i cut a whole through the fan grill at the bottom to fit a tube to the pump. And yes i velcro my res to the wall in the case :D

I guess its safe for me to assume you casuals play games on speakers :p.

If you have to glue your face to the side panel to hear it then you are getting off lightly. Coil whine can be very loud, yours obviously isn't.

I usually listen to music or play games and actually WEAR my headphones, and it only whines in games. I can hear it if i take my headphones off and play but for some reason it doesnt bother me. People who eat loudly with their mouth open bother me more lol

Yes i think most people WEAR their headphones, lol, bit not everybody WEARS them all the time. But anyway, youre missing the point; coil whine gets a lot worse than just about hearing it if yours giving your case a hug. Mine can be heard across the room, for example.

Mine can too man. But does it really matter if you're getting up to take a leak or whatever and your game is still on? When you sit down and put your headphones back on and start playing again id hope you actually have enough volume to kind of kill that coilwhine a bit.

I can hear my coilwhine with headphones on if i hug my case, believe me i have coilwhine. I guess im just lucky that it doesnt bother me :o

*pokes AMDMatt* is he real? :p Do we have an NVIDIA rep too? Nice someone from AMD would hang out here though :D

If you want to convert me to the red army send me a 295X? :D lol. I did think about that actually when I was building (with those recent discounts). I was in the AMD and ATI camp for many years :3 my build from 2005 (Athlon 64) is still going actually. My parents use it ^_^ and the X1800 lasted quite a good few years before it died.

Anywayy. My 780Ti (reference) had quite loud coil whine but it was under my desk so didn't hear it as bad as I would have if it had been sat on top next to me. The whine happened during 3DMark and some menus (with high FPS). I can't say I have experienced any coil whine with 2 x MSI 970s. New PC though. New power supply (AX860).

Also I recently got 2 x reference 980s (don't ask) and nothing sound wise from them. So it seemed like the situation is definitely improved. A thing to note though is that I'm also using G-Sync and that probably stops those crazy high 1000fps on menus you get sometimes. Euro Truck Simulator 2 was awful for this. Made my 780 squeel badly.

On a random note; Euro Truck Simulator 2 fiiiiinally runs at Rock solid frame rates and is super smooth :D only took 6 cores and two graphics cards lol.

I am indeed 'real'. :D

There's a few AMD guys here, we like Overclockers.

There's actually a lot of gamers at AMD, though not many at my skill level in Battlefield 4. :p ;)

Don't tell Roy that. :D

On-topic: One of my cards sounds like it's buzzing, is that coil whine? It only does it under full load so i assume it is.

In all the years of pc gaming I have never once had a gpu whine. And that includes the nvidia GPUs I have owned in the past.

Guess I just lucky, but another part of me thinks they is more to it like combination of PSUs and GPUs.

Depends on environments. I had it with GTX260s and my current GTX670. Only ever get it in UI where FPS is silly high (like 6000FPS) in STALKER's intro movies or Mass Effect 3 UI.

In games, I usually barely scrap above 40FPS average as I tend to have so many mods running ha.
