Coil whine , options?

With it being a living room PC I would prefer one were the fans only spin under load , looking at a hx750i which meets Bagley's platinum recommendation and also only spins up on load.

I have the 850 version. It's a great PSU. Only thing the reviews seemed to mention at the time - correctly - was that the cheapish cables that come with it can be a pain to get "latched" correctly. Push them in REAL HARD and make sure they are fully latched and you should be fine.
 
I bought a MSI 980TI Lightning card from OcUK that had terrible coil whine. I tried 2 PSU's a XFX 750w and a OCZ 1000w and it still persisted. I just returned it under the DSR. I never mentioned the coil whine as I knew they would not exchange it for this issue.

Used to have a TX750 (now hx1000i) and tested still the same. The whine is definitely coming from the cards themselves.

With the door on, headphones on while gaming. Really not an issue for me though.
 
Since I installed a Palit 1070 I have coil whine with a XFX 750 PSU.
I tried it with a 1000w OCZ PSU and even more coil whine. As a last resort I tried it with a cheap Corsair CX 430w and I had zero coil whine, absolutely silent. Unfortunately the 430w is not good enough to power all of my PC.

I am reaching the point where I think buying PC components is just too much hassle.

I now have to buy another lottery PSU and then I was hoping to buy a new monitor......

You asked for suggestions and people recommended returning it under CCR. You seem to have selective reading or scared to tell OcUK you want to return within your rights. So if you've decided to keep the card and put up with the whine yet still complain about OcUK... okay - enjoy your card :confused:

Online, mail and telephone order customers have the right to cancel their order for a limited time even if the goods aren’t faulty. Sales of this kind are known as ‘distance selling’.

You must offer a refund to customers if they’ve told you within 14 days of receiving their goods that they want to cancel. They have another 14 days to return the goods once they’ve told you.

You must refund the customer within 14 days of receiving the goods back. They don’t have to provide a reason.

The actual law which covers this is the Consumer Contracts Regulations (CCR).

Are you referring to me? I have confirmed that card is ok with a cx 430w psu so it is a lottery if a card produces coil whine or not depending on the psu. Now I'm confused!

GTX580, 780, 295X2, Fury Nano, all suffered from coil whine. Few months of usage and is gone.

I think you were extremely lucky getting rid of it on all them cards, My 780 Windforce has been doing it for the last 3 years.

The Fury Nitro I bought from OCUK a couple of weeks ago had coil whine. I asked to return it and was told coil whine is not a fault so it was not eligible for a refund.

I pointed out that Gibbo had said this previously:

"OcUK will accept an RMA for a card which has coil whine in extreme circumstances which we consider to be audible on a quality single rail PSU of gold rating or higher. Audible as in coil whine in normal usage and gaming which is audible above case fans in a closed case. Coil whine in benchmarks is not considered as a fault."

Customer services changed their mind after that and allowed me to return it for a refund. Still waiting on my postage being refunded mind...

OP if you've had this card for less than 14 days then RMA it??
That's it no ifs or buts pal ,set up a web note wait for an rma number and send it back as a unwanted item. Don't mention coil whine just say it's not the card you hoped for (poor performance) and Get a refund
That's it that's your rights ,I'm sorry I can't believe your beating around the bush with this. OCUK should NOT be stopping you from returning a card as unwanted within 14 days???

This exactly isn't not just the quality of the PSU, though it can help.

It can just be a bit of luck that certain card/PSU combinations resonate with each other, you could get the same model card and PSU again and have completely different results.
