Coilovers....

i've got tein hr on the front & tein ha on the back of mine - handles like a gokart but the ride is abit harsh on bumpy roads with 35 profile tyres on the back ;)

build quality seems fine except one of the droplink mounts on one of the strut bent when the link on the otherside came loose, doh!

Bren at www.apexperformance.co.uk has just been make the uk reseller of K-Sport stuff... Its superbly made and designed and looks the business. Great price too... £475 for a set of coilovers with adjustable top mounts or £599 for the funky inverted ones with everyway adjustment for 200sx s13/14/14a butt he does them for quite a lot of other motors (Mate of mine has just fitted them to his pulsar)

Oh and check out thier 8 pot 330mm brakes for about 800 quid...

I had AVO coilovers on my last car and they were awful. If the road wasn't as smooth as glass they'd take your fillings out and the rear end would hop when you tried to corner hard. They also leaked after about 1000 miles too so I'd definitely not recommend them to anyone.

On the MR2 I've got H&R coilvers which are absolutely superb. The ride is smoother than standard but still handles really well. Even though I've got 18's with 35 profile tyres and my suspension is lowered 40mm all round the ride is silky smooth. I don't know what they're like on the Teg but if anyone has an MR2 I'd definitely recommend them

K sport seems to be the older model of D2's. Dyno curves tend to show the adjustment does very little compared to dampers like Koni's, also i think it may only be reb :o und adjustable.

Ive heard good stuff about the H&R stuff over on Honda-tech too. The suspension market is a real minefield when you have this much choice and when the OEM's have done a pretty good job already getting decnet improvements isn't always guaranteed.

We are talking about road cars here. I doubt OEM ones would please you when you take them apart by the sounds of things

Yup - did road car development work too. Prowler, IS200/300 Sport, Yaris, Elise, Exige, 911 GT3

Personally, most of the various 3rd party damper units are pretty much the same with only minor differences and the adjustment you get on them is frankly pathethic.

Custom built is the way to go tbh.

There we have our answer, get Simon to build you a set of custom ones for you ;) iirc he does it for a living

HT

Used to build them...

Just don't ask how much I charge. ;)

The £4-10k would just be for basic design work and manafacture and building them. Actually getting them set to work properly with the cars chassis, tyres, aerodynamics and general performance would be...well...too expensive for most people.

have you considered looking at ASTs? like the type 25 has? my brother has them on his mini and theyre very good !

Ive heard a few people say AST ones are pretty good, Whiteline sell rebadged AST coilovers as group 4 kits.

I've got some money to spend on the car & it's a toss up between coilovers or a Toda clutch & lightened flywheel.
as the DC5 is pretty competant to begin with, what you're trying to do with your money is to noticeably improve the car.
bearing in mind that you can't push your car to it's limits on the road in it's current state, uprating the suspension further would IMHO be wasted money.
far better to go down the clutch and flywheel route.
even a short blast of the loud pedal will be noticeably improved.

My coilovers are aparently rebranded D2 ones.

No experience with any other brand and their longevity is really yet to be tested, however the supplier seems to be happy with the near non existant return rate as yet.

There are other types of 200sx supension available that will be more forgiving on the road. I certainly think my coilovers are a step too far for the rutted pot holed South Yorkshire roads and I dont think I will ever go as far in future with any non track cars I purchase.

Buying again, I would go for the non adjustable similar priced nismo suspension for my car. I like the ability to alter the damper settings for track on coilovers, but the other adjustability of the coilovers is largely wasted on me.

As for whether its a good idea for you, I dont think anyoneone else bar D5 drivers could help you there.

Wouldn't touch Spax, Ohlins, Koni or Bilstein tbh. Have taken the apart and tbh are not really that well made.

Penske do some good dampers - that are made by another company that I'm not allowed to mention.

Personally - Go with ones that you have to rebuild every 1000km - buy a stack load of spares *dirt cheap anyway* and then you can customise them to whatever you want just by changing the shims/piston/pressures

Piece of urine.

Little expensive though - £4k a set for cheap ones - up to £10k for 4 way adjustable with pressure BOV's, remote reservoir, with a F1 style 29mm diameter piston, titanium shaft and accessories, magnesium caps and covers, aluminium bodies and 10ton instantanious pressure capability.

Isn't comparing £10k suspension again £500 suspension a bit like sticking a Kia next to an Enzo and saying "Have taken the Kia apart and tbh its not really that well made." :p

Not sure why 80% of people buy adjustable coilovers anyway - they're overkill. I think most do it because of the adjustable ride hight so they can "slam it to the maxx, dawg" *slaps fingers together*

I got mine because the cost of uprated adjustable shocks with matched springs, gaitors and bump stops came to the same price as a set of coilovers ;)

Do exe-tc make any units for the DC5?

world leaders from what I have read and being based in Exeter are at hand to :)

supply world rally teams/btcc etc.

I have Cusco Zero 2's on me Evo and there not bad, good quality but bone shakers! Think I prefer the GAB ones that where on the car before hand.

ooh only round the corner from my office, never knew that :)

Altho looking at the road application list all they do are Evos, Imprezas and Porkers.
