Cold days upon us!

My coldest most miserable night ride was up to sheffield from reading in February this year to see my mate. Left at 9pm, due to spur of the moment choice. I had normal jeans on, my sidi boots, summer leather jack and helmet with summer gloves. 40 miles in I had tears in my eyes from fingers being beyond sore. Decided to pull over and put on my waterproofs to stop the wind, also put some thicker gloves on that I packed lol.

Worst part was the hot water wasnt running at the first service station I pulled up at so did 110 miles frozen at 90+ mph speed simply to find a service station asap lol.

This was on a VFR 800 09 plate so at least i had some sort of wind shield lol.

last winter I went with:

Normal boots + ski socks over my work socks
Textile all-in-one with winter lining
Lightweight fleece
Winter Buff (best things ever!) I went for one that was half fleece half normal
Summer gloves + muffs + heated grips (find my fingers blood supply shuts off very quickly with winter gloves due to lack of movement)

All in all it wasn't too bad apart from when it was really heavy sleet, but think that was down to my textiles needing re-proofed.

how much are you looking at for entire winter kit? I rode last winter a bit not in the worst of it though and only have leather jacket/trousers so got soaked!

Don't have use of a car so often now as I've just sold mine so might have to invest. I did get some water proofs and some winter gloves that my old man had at least.

Could do with a proper neck scarf thing though! Probably some better gloves as well

I'm going back to the car on wet cold day, I'm not getting soaked and cold, it adds about 20 mins each way, which in my mind covers the getting into the cold and rain gear and taking it off, any dry cold day I'll layer up, I have winter gloves and yet to put the liner back in my jacket

Also I have Oxford digital heated grips which are soooooooo nice, I have them on 20% at the moment and tend to turn them off when I get into town and slow down and don't use them rifing home, 100% is truely roasting I'm thinking about wrapping bacon round so I get hot bacon when I get to work

+1 for heated grips! :D

I also have Gortex winter gloves with a rubber visor wiper on the left finger ;)

Other than that, good set of textile waterproof clothing with removable thermal lining does the job nicely :)

I was out the other night, and I could feel the chill setting in. Makes me remember why I want the BMW for long journeys in the coming months, and not the GSX-R lol.

+1 for heated grips
+1 for heated seats
-2 for not being a man lol.

A few little tips to pass on that have helped me riding during winter. If you don't want to get heated grips, handlebar muffs are a good alternative (but do take a bit of getting used to). Keeps the wind blast/chill off and makes a world of difference.

Base layers or thermals can help a lot too. RE: riding in icy conditions, just make sure you do everything a lot slower. Braking, accelerating, turning. Don't be afraid to hang of the bike a bit (you will look a bit of a tool!) to keep the bike as upright as possible if going around a corner.
