I'm fairly sure our old PMO department could have deduced salary based on the rates held in our resource scheduling tool, if they could be bothered (baselining their own salary and then using ratios).
I think the issue (from an employee's perspective) with people knowing each other's salaries is that in organisations without a clearly defined pay structure it can lead to feelings of jealousy.
As for myself, although I don't tell anyone my salary I wouldn't be overly concerned if other people found out. I highly doubt anyone with the same job title (at my company) earns less than me anyway.
