What are your favourite Ghibli films?

I've got Howl's Moving Castle (absolutely adore that film!), plus Spirited away and Kiki's Delivery Service.

I'm hoping to "catch 'em all" as they say and wondered how you collectors managed to do it? On Amazon, I've found a US/Canada box set and eBay has a box set from Malaysia. Both could prove an issue with region settings and being stung for customs tax as they're over the threshold. Also, both box sets have managed to cram the 20 films over 6 discs, so I would be questioning the image and sound quality of such a compression ratio.

Would it be better for me to just collect the remaining 17 films 1 at a time at about £6 at a time?

Cheers :-)

The malaysian sets are fakes.
There is no way the official releases will have 3-4 films per disc, and yes it will suffer from it, probably quite badly.
All the Ghibli films should be one per disc for any official release.

There is/was a set with most of the films* released last year in the UK and America from memory but it sold out fairly fast (I think it was about £150 for 12 at the time).
I was tempted by it, but at that point I'd already got most of the films on DVD then again on BD.

Personally I'd suggest just buying the individual films as/when they are at a price you're happy with, generally they sit around £13-14 for the blu-rays and do go lower on occasion.

*I think it was all the Miyazaki ones released to that point.

Thanks Werewolf for confirming the fakes, and yes I didn't think the 3-4 per disc compression would have done the films any favours. I will therefore hunt around on eBay for individual discs :-)

Cool.

I have edited my OP to turn this thread into more of a discussion about the films. Wondered what your faves are guys?

Mine is definitely Howl's Moving Castle as I like the kinda steampunk style to it. Plus the castle's various exits depending on what colour on the gobo the marker was set on.

For me it's a bit of a three way tie (although it seems to vary almost every time I think of it).

Laputa, the ancient robot gardener especially.
Whisper of the Heart.
Totoro, which reminds me of this.

I have a soft spot for Nausicaa of the valley of the wind because it was the first one I ever saw.

And I bought Spirited Away on blu-ray recently. I've only just got a blu-ray player and remembering how visually stunning it was on standard def TV, I thought it was a must-buy. Still not re-watched it yet though. :o

Yup. Channel 4 one morning. I was transfixed. A simply amazing film.

It's a true adventure movie IMO. An average boy with a dream looking for treasure and overcoming obstacles.

It also doesn't have silly Hollywood ending either and I thought it ending was perfect, very fitting.

Princess monoke is my favourite and a toss up between tale of princess kaguya and whisper of the heart as second place. Laputa and nausica are special too mainly because they were my first ghibli films

Did anyone else first see Laputa back in the 90's on C4?
IIRC they showed it several times with the first English dub (from Streamline I think), rather than the new Disney one.
