Color Calibration?

It seems to me that some screens have horrible colours...
But trying for myself to fiddle with the colours, I find I fail just as much and it is pretty time consuming. I know that there are some gadgets out there, and I tried to google a little, but it seems a jungle to me.

So if someone in the know would please enlighten me, I would be happy.
What would the cheapest colour calibrator, that would be able to correct the most horrible screens but not break the bank, cost. And which ones are they?

I did look at the sticky, but did not find any info... If I missed it, please point out the obvious. And please do forgive me :)

Edit: I looked at the DataColor Spyder4 express and thought it would maybe be worth it, as I can use it on future monitors too. Any opinion(s)

have a look at this article which talks about calibration and explains a bit about different kinds of devices.

You can stick with free software based methods which are readily available. The Lagom.nl site is very popular for that.

If you want a calibration tool then something like the Spyder range is low cost and reasonable, although personally i'm not a fan and they seem wildly variable in their performance. X-rite have a better range of tools. Their i1 Display 2 was always very good but has been replaced by the new i1 Display Pro which is more easily used with newer screen technologies and backlights. That would probably be a good choice if budget is sufficient i think.
