Anyone up for some combat flight sim discussion?

Used to play Air Warrior back in the day, but a regular WWII Online player now. Played Allied for a couple of years (ground mostly) but playing Axis air now.

Only tried the 109e so far due to RDP timings but looking forward to the 109f and 109g, not sure I'll be so keen on the 190.

Got an X52 which I still haven't configured properly and really tempted by the Track IR as seen people use it and looks like a great addition.

For anyone who hasn't seen this guide, it's a great guide for combat air skills;

I was a big combat simmer back in the 90's (SP not MP though).

Cut my teeth with Amiga titles like F16 Combat Pilot, Gunship 2000 and F15 Strike Eagle, before moving up through the PC "greats" like Tornado, Strike Commander, TFX, EF2000, USNF and most of the EA/Janes titles. My all time favourite probably Longbow 2. They don't make 'em like that any more, for sure.

I only recently started to play Falcon 4 in earnest but while it recaptures the spirit of some of the early sims, could do with an intermediate avionics mode. The "easy" level feels you are cheating, while "realistic" has you vaporised over the North Korean landscape before even working out how to set the radar.

Really wish I had kept an old P90 with a 3DFX card in the loft, so I could fire up and enjoy those old classics.

TrackIR is awesome, I will not fly without it now as it just feels so darn clunky using any other system for viewpoint manipulation, buy one, you wont regret it. I've never got into WWIIOL and haven't done much flying in my preferred sim of IL2 recently, mainly due to needing to redo my X52Pro profile which just seems to put me off :(

Yeech, now lets see him in something other than a 1v1 setup, blooming awful situational awareness, on the servers I used to play on in IL2 he'd have been dead with a couple of allied pilots handing him his overconfident backside.

i still remember the old days in F19 stealth fighter.... going stealth flying at about 1ft off the ground for about 500 miles avoiding radar detection :D to get back home.

Im sure i got the CONGRESSIONAL MEDAL at some point. GREAT GAME.

oldest flight game on amiga prolly WINGS (and that was not really simmy : but great nonetheless)

mmm F19 was great fun. threading the needle between radar stations and constantly looking for a depot or extra targets for more points and medals. Or limping home on the smell of an oily rag because you were hunting too long and your cannon ammo is gone. I do miss my zipstick too /sigh

In wwiio you can generally see them coming from a couple of km away, he was checking his horizons enough to make sure no one was sneaking up on him. The environment is so enormous that there's not a whole lot of chance of getting bounced unless you're over one of the more active fights.

Great tactics for wwiio, it's all about conserving your energy. Too often I find myself turning to chase someone and losing all my energy. Now I know better :)

Should be getting an X52 joystick this week for my b'day. Still wondering if it's worth €108. Seems an awful lot to spend but I'm hoping that I can use it for as long as I need it. My old Saitek SP550 is getting a little old ;)

Glad to see there's more then just me that remembers F19. Used to play that when I was 7 or 8. Great missions down into Libya, across northern Europe. I remember getting up really high one time just before my fuel ran out but I managed to glide the entire way back to my airfield. Brilliant game.

He wasn't checking his horizons anywhere near enough, but then if the fighting is that spread out he doesn't need to. As I said, in the servers I used to play on he'd have been handed his backside.

Boom and Zoom are great tactics for a 109 period, unless you go in with the disadvantage. Air combat is ALL about energy management, if you forget that you're already losing.

Pro or standard?

On the X52, is there Vista compatible programming software for it yet?

They did do a version but it didn't have the 3D model so it was a bit of a nightmare to programme IIRC. Great joystick but could do with some modern games to use it with!
