Combating energy prices

A question to the thread participants in general: what do you have your thermostat set at when the house is unoccupied during the day? I used to set it at 16 but have lowered it to 14.

14 is OK?
18/19c. I'm lucky enough to still be on a cheap deal though.

Is the floor concrete? If so did you insulate it prior to the conversion?
We bought the house with the conversion done so it's anyone's guess how well insulated it is, or what exactly was done. The floor feels uneven, so I don't think it was given the proper attention. We do intend to "do it properly" and get a radiator added to the GCH but, with a wedding and honeymoon to save for, it's on the back burner for now. It'll be quite the task and we'll have to rip up some walls or floors in the main house to locate the heating pipes. I've also heard you can't go through the fire wall that borders the internal walls with pipes etc so I'm not sure we can even do exactly what we want.

Decided to bite the bullet and buy a thermal imaging camera to check the internal insulation is working as intended, altough still only a third of the way through, removing the plaster is just horrendous. Fairly sure it'll confirm my thoughts about significant other areas to improve, but at least I'll know for sure.

WI could have rented one, but this was only £235 so worth a shot. Seems a decent spec compared to some of the other cheaper options, or even the Flir devices. https://www.topdon.com/products/TC001

That Topdon thermal camera looks to be a right bargain.
The problem with the Flir offerings is that you have to pay through the nose for a half decent refresh rate, otherwise they are a pitiful 9Hz. I opted for a Hikmicro B20 which has a refresh rate of 25Hz like the Topdon you have ordered but it's a handheld device. To keep this post on topic, here's an image of my uninsulated loft hatch:

Could do with being insulated and fixing the cold spot to the bottom right of the image, probably disturbed insulation.

I tend to just turn the thermostat to 13 (default for nest) when we're not in. It drops to maybe 14 at the moment during the day and takes an hour to get back up to 17. I'm doing a proper log of the temp, so I'll pist a nerdy graph tomorrow or friday lol.

You should definitely rent it out to forum members…. Wink wink nudge nudge…

but refresh rate corresponds to the integration period giving accuracy (it's not a movie - it's like slow aperture on a night photograph) - a zoom function for external structure seemed the invaluable functionality when I'd looked.

I'm not sure about the integration period giving accuracy (maybe a different thing from the refresh rate), but if you were to use and compare a Flir 9Hz to their 25Hz or higher models, the viewing difference is jarring (as is their cost!). The Flir on screen display refresh is almost like a slideshow at 9Hz. I agree a zoom function is great but I wasn't going to spend >£3k for it :D. If I was doing as a business then maybe I could justify spending £25k on their top tier kit...

£235 and ripped your house apart to save a tenner :)

You need a new gfx card mate only 16.3 FPS in Cyberpunk is crap

How much are you paying daily guys? I set our thermostat at 16c and left it and it’s burning through £4-£5 a day anyway. My office/summer house gets silly cold over night. I’ll get in the in the morning and it’s at 7c inside. It’s insulated but seems to hold no heat through the night. It’s got no heating bar an electric oil rad set to turn on for an hour in the morning and then throughout the day as I need it. It’s insane that we’re living like this.

Yep - just spent 4 days at the house I'm renovating and burned £7-8 daily while we were there, baths washing etc. Set up the heating to maintain about 15-16° (analog dial...) when we left Monday. I can see remotely it's still burning £5 odd a day (including standing charge).

TBF there are a lot of draughts and exposed areas while the garage and porch have no ceiling. I do expect it to improve once we're done but that's after winter!
