Come laugh at me, I got owned by a Milk float.

I got outstripped by an artic with a full size trailer when I had my Polo... :(

400+ BHP, 1000lb/ft+ torque most artics will easily out drag many a small engined vehicle, never ceases to amuse me and bemuse the car drivers. :D

My first car was an 88BHP Astra and this happened to me several times, very embarrassing :o

These new electric vehicles can really shift, eh!

I stole a milkfloat once... I was 18 months old*!!
Mum was chatting with the milkman, I was playing in the garden. Wandered off unnoticed, got into the open cab and started playing with stuff. I remember I could reach the wheel and stand on the accelerator. I have a distinct memory of going and looking out the nearside door, waving happily at the pair of them as they came hareing down the road to come save me!!

It's one of those many tales that crops up at family events quite often.

*According to Mum, anyway. Definitely under 3 though, as we'd moved house by then.

True enough. It's amazing how many people do it though. I'd say 50% of the people I overtake do it.

Not to take too OT but...

I had an interesting experience yesterday. Was driving home from work with someone driving close behind me on an A-road. He didn't seem to aggressive but was fairly close and when we got to a straight he flashed me twice, I have no idea what for. There was a fairly steady trail of traffic but being a somewhat considerate driver I had left quite a large gap in front of me.

He flashes me one more time, then indicates and goes for an overtake. It's a long stretch and there was nothing coming, but there are sideroads and for that reason there is a double line on the road to signal no overtaking.

I know it was wrong to do it but with the flashing and I guess generally being in a bad mood I sped right up. He paps his horn at length and falls back. Proceeds to sit up my backside.

Fast forward one minute and he speeds past me, nearly going head on with on-coming traffic, I have to break to let him back in (no I don't want to crash my new car), he was driving a banged up old 206 with a crappy private plate. He puts his hazards on and slows to a stop in the road, door opens and he gets out!

30ish year old man of slight build in a tracksuit. I had absolutely no intention of getting out of the car but I couldn't go anywhere because though I left plenty of distance before stopping he was walking in the middle of the lane and there was traffic coming on the other side of the road. I ensured the doors were locked and watched as he walked up to my car. As soon as he moved to come around to the window I just instinctively sped off, round his car and off down the road.

Funnily enough at the next roundabout a mile or so on a police car turned in front of me. I was planning to flag him down if the guy turned up again behind me but I didn't see him again.

Interesting event that I shan't be forgetting for some time anyway. We all do daft things every now and then but you have to be careful because there are some maniacs on the road! I've had a fair few road-rage incidents before but this is the first time I've seen someone get out of their car! So OP just be glad the milkman didn't get out and start pelting you with milk bottles! :D

Power to weight ratio of an artic still isn't that significant though. Did the maths and a typical 400HP tractor unit still only has around 50HP/tonne & 120lbft/tonne.

Compared to 48hp/tonne 66lbft/tonne in the Polo. But the lorry has a very small power band and loads of gears to get through, and those figures didn't include weight of the trailer or any contents there might have been!

Guessing the lorry must have had a bit more than 400HP, but it was still embarrassing. :o

Not on the same level as OP but yesterday on my way to work I got left for dead at the lights by a BMW I3  now I knew they were fairly sharpish with them being electric and light weight etc but there is something not right about such a small ridiculous looking car taking off so quickly :p I didn't catch him until 45mph lol.
Made me feel better seeing this vid of a nerd in his I3 giving an M3 a run for its money

True enough, most trucks we run are between 450 and 520bhp, it's not uncommon though to encounter 580,620,730 and 750bhp units and believe me if the trailer is empty it makes very little difference given an average empty weights 8tons and the truck is designed to pull 44t or more.

Driving a 620bhp V8 a while back I kept myself amused by leaving various cars and vans accelerating from say 20 to 50mph then physics and the speed limiter spoiled the fun! :o :D

was it this milk float??

I've lost to a Scania V8 tractor unit late at night, setting off from a traffic light in my old Peugeot Expert non turbo van with a whopping 70hp. As I set off, I started to pass but as soon as I slammed it into second (20mph?) he came steaming past.

How do I know it was a V8? I never knew what it was at the time but had spotted a huge illuminated V on the front, and when taking off it sounded like a helicopter. Blup blup blup blup blup... put two and two together!

Used to work for Sainsbury's online, those vans, although restricted to 60mph, could certainly move off the line if you wanted them to when empty.

The teenage Corsa drivers of the world stood no chance :D

I think you should try looking at torque rather than bhp when considering acceleration.
