Just Played it and...........well to put it shortly it is the most terrible game I
have played all year!
Why just to start at the bread and butter of RTS games I suppose that most
have some form of resource collection that you have to balance with offense
and defence. EA have been crafty and called it a real time tactics game and
pretty much all it boils in the attack and defence part of the multiplayer
games is you spam units that can easily destroy MCVs (or at least that was
the message I got from the beta and my brief play on C&C 4 multiplayer).
This is so the player cannot produce any more units and you can making it
easy to mop up any straggling units and defences with no power. All this
happens while your opponent waits to re-spawn so they can try and stop
you from doing too much damage. The only time you can't do this nuke there
MCV's only you win is in single player as there is usually some time limit in
place which means you can't just play a game of whack the weasel with the
MCV destroying units.
Now to the resource bit and this may surprise you but there isn't a lot of it
as each player gets a set amount of points they can use (50 usually, which
is about 8-10 tanks or 15 troops) but as troops die you get all of your points
back from each unit so most just end up making more units at complete ease
and uncaring to what happens to them as it won't make a huge difference.
This has also made players who tend to rush zerg style have an easier time.
Buildings construction has also gone except for the MCV (at a stretch) which
means that while everything is easily in one place that also means it is easy
to kill off your entire unit building line in one sweep. While don't get me
wrong this makes it far more tactical decisions where you place your MCV
and how you advance with your MCV. It is also become so easy yet also
very pointless to destroy your opponents MCV as your opponent gets
another one for free in 30 seconds unlike in the older games if you lost your
base or main MCV early in the game it was more or less game over unless
you had hidden an engineer, a way to get another MCV built or had a base
tucked away somewhere.
Now over to story where it is pretty much just some bland cut scenes that
have been stuck together and leave even more questions at the end as it
tells you absolutely nothing about what you were aiming for or what has
happened throughout the game with even entire large sections of cannon
being pulled out of the game.
Another bit that isn't as important game play wise but still important to me is
DRM which still isn't working for many players as EA still have not managed to
get this right even now!
In-fact! EA you have made me look far more favourably on C&C Generals and
Renegade. While I had some specific small hate against those games this
C&C4 has made me see them in a new more brighter light.
So EA, at the end of the day this giant turd of a command and conquer
game you have delivered is what it has taken to bring my quality guide down
and likely killed off any possible series which for me as a long time fan of the
series is not a good moment for me as I really wanted this game to do well!
