Comments on graphics test!

March edition of PC Advisor has held a test of currently available graphics cards. I must admit that i'm slightly puzzled as to the outcome:

They tested frame rates from Quake4, Halo, Fear & Doom3 on an Athlon 3800 X2 system. Average framerates over the four tested games were as follows:

Gainward 6800gs Ultra 256mb (73)
MSI NX6600GT 128mb (55.5)
Sapphire X800GTO 256mb (55.1)
Asus N7800GTX 256mb (75.4)
Club 3D X1800XL 256mb (67.6)
Gainward 7800GTX Ultra 256mb (73.6)
Gigabyte GV-NX78T256V-B 7800GT (65.3)
Sapphire X1800XT 512mb (78)

Looking at the figures above you could say that they're all being shown up by the 6800gs.

I would normally agree, but what's that got to do with a comparible test on the same machine with the same games. The average figure is one I owrked out myself they just state the frame rate for each game.

Oh BTW the figures I gave are for 1280 x 1024 only.

To add to the above.

Its far from a diverse set of games. Quake4 & Doom3 use essentially the same engine.
Also lets see how they handle games at higher res which many people would play at.
You would expext the 7800GTX, X1800XL, X1800XT to outshine the 6800gs Ultra.

Plus, a 3800+ X2 only runs at 2ghz. I t would be a bottleneck for the higher cards

Your gfx card ram/speed etc & your ram would bottleneck before the CPU and I don't think you'll find a 2ghz athlon process or would bottleneck these games at all

Plus don't forget many people these days are running games on 19" tft's which run at the 1280 x 1024 res.

One thing i've been meaning to ask is why some people run their games at 1600x1200 etc. I'm currently running a 19"crt and once I get above 1024x768 res in games I can't see any difference. Far more difference in made by AA & AF which unfortunately it doesn't show in this test.

Yes single card setup. I'll expand a little more, here are the FPS test results for each of the games running in 1280x1024 on an Evesham Axis MKR (Athlon 3800 X2, 1gb Ram).

Gainward 6800gs Ultra 256mb - Quake4 98.2/Halo 74.8/Fear 43.0/Doom3 75.8 (Average = 73.0)

Sapphire X1800XT 512mb - Quake4 94.0/Halo 94.3/Fear 51.0/Doom3 72.5 (Average = 78.0)

Am guessing them 6800gs scores look much like what you get from a 7800gt or 7800gtx..I think they got there scores mixed up.


What is the break down of the Gainward 7800GTX scores.

nah m8 the higer end cards would bottleneck a 2gig cpu at 1280/1024
