I'm on virgin media, 250 bolt and just out of contract and looking at options as VM are talking about £44 for 1GB, where as Community fibre are at £26 for 1GB.

Thats less than im currently paying for 250 i have.

I game, so do my son, so needing a good provider.

Would anyone recommend CF and 1GB service or are better options out there ?

Anything is better than VM.
I had VM at my old place for about 7 years, they were the only fibre available. Speed was awesome and only had two problems with them over that time.

Unfortunately, the problems lasted 2-3 weeks of absolutely no internet and the usual case of being told it's your house, or router etc, but it turned out they screwed something up in the cabs down the road both times. They are also pretty damn expensive.

I'm with Trooli now, so far so good, other than one minor issue where the speed dropped a lot, I spoke to their tech support and they were absolutely clueless and ended up resetting my router remotely, even though I told them not too, which meant I had to re-setup all my tapo plugs and Google home devices!!!

I'm currently with Community Fibre, on CGNAT 1gb connection, it's NOT supposed to be CGNAT, but I'll be getting it resolved when I contact them about a renewal of the contract.

Whilst I'm not using anything that directly conflicts with CGNAT, I haven't really found many issues. But if you do need non-CGNAT connections, then that might be an issue if alternatives to bypass CGNAT aren't viable or available for you.

Good otherwise.

I said I would cancel if they didn’t take off CGNAT after encountering more issues than I expected.

They didn’t get back to me in time so sorted alternative provision. However they finally called and offered to take it off. This was on the standard 1 gig package.

Service was ok apart from CGNAT. Relatively weak standard router if you rely on them.

What is CGNAT? it seems it has massive impact on connections based on the replies received.
You share a single IP with multiple other users. For most households it doesn’t make any difference, but it can be problematic for gaming, running your own services from home etc.

i see, thanks you.

CF dont have the option to not have it off?, ill give them a ring and see.

Any other provider that's suited for gaming?

or shall i remain with VM and have a word with the retentions team?

Officially only the 3Gb service has no CGNAT and the terms have changed to reflect that (used to be 500Mb and up).

"For all our home broadband services below 3000Mbps speed we use Carrier Grade Nat (CGN) technology to make efficient use of IPv4 addresses. Port forwarding is not possible through CGN and there are a tiny number of specialist use cases that might require this, typically to enable a direct connection from outside your home LAN to a service that you are running on it. If you want to make use of port forwarding then you will need to purchase or upgrade to our 3000Mbps or 3000Mbps Premium home broadband services or any of our business broadband services."

You can still ask and you might have success, I'm only on 1Gb but asked to not be moved to CGNAT when I renewed and it was no issue.

There's a larger thread dedicated to CF here:

Most modern online games won't have an issue with CGNAT, but you do get the odd one that is affected.

As a service I haven't had any issues at all. Stability has been much better than my previous BT connection, and VM wasn't an option as I'm in an oversubscribed area (although recently I've noticed less VM WiFi and more CF WiFi names with the neighbours). Latency for gaming is very low as it's true fibre.

I've been on 1GB package since Jan this year, moved from Virgin to CF, best thing I did this year, service has been great, no issues either gaming wise. I'll say go for it.

:)

I've been on their 500Mb package for close to 18 months now. Fairly sure I'm pre-CGNAT and haven't had any issues with my remote access to my NAS or Plex or playing nay games (but then I don't play any multiplayer online games :)). I have had no issues in the 18 months with speeds or stability and think I have had to reboot the modem twice in that time. The supplied Linksys router I turned into an AP with another of the same model and use my EdgeMax Lite as the actual router.

We've definitely had more down times than VM (on the 1Gb package) but across 2 years, it's been a small handful. I was on CGNAT which stopped my server running but they were kind enough to take it off. 1Gb up/down for ~£26 is a dream and I've earned £200 in Amazon vouchers for referrals.
