Looking for a new place outside of London, so I can get a bit more bang for my buck.

So far I've shortlisted:

  • Redhill - not the best area but not awful either
  • Crawley - prefer this to Redhill but a bit more asspensiff
Anyone else got any suggestions pls?

Cheers <3

RESULTS:

(I'll be updating this OP as we go, might come in handy for anyone else)

No:
Crawley, no, bit scruffy and neglected.
Redhill, no, seems like a place where dreams go to die.
Bishop's Stortford - no, scruffy, felt neglected.
Godalming - no, lovely little town, people all looked decent, but far too dead.
Waltham Cross - no, the less said the better. What a dump.

Yes:
Farnham, yes, provided we stay on the right side of the tracks. The other side looks a bit crap, but the high street looked nice, there was a nice atmosphere, enough restaurants and shops.
Hertford, yes, but it's a bit of a commute. I might hafta move there so I can become BFFs with @Yaayuh! tho.
Guildford, yes, nice place, might have to revisit to see it again.

Where in London do you work? That can make a big difference to the convenience of commuting. E.g. if you work in Putney then living in on the eastern side of outer London could be a long commute and vice versa due to train connections.

EDIT: Or will you be commuting via scooter?

I'd be looking for fast train lines, quickest way into town. You seem to be looking at that anyway

Coulsdon?
Merstham?

@dlockers is the northern correspondent.

Edit: "Creepy Crawley"

For ease of commute, Rochester does okay. It's the last stop for the daily commuter trains coming up from the coast before they run fast into London - about 35-40 minutes from Rochester to London Bridge/Cannon Street.

How often do you need to commute?
Because I'd say if you're bothering to move out, don't go to the still expensive half way places.

E.g if on the SW Waterloo line, you could live in Woking or Basingstoke. Both arguably as good (or rather not) as each other. But the price of a 3 bed semi in Woking would probably get you a 4 bed detached in Basingstoke, for the price of...maybe an extra 30mins/day sitting on a train?

Depends how far you're willing to go, but this one comes to mind as it's in my neck of the woods:
Didcot Parkway to Paddington is 40 mins.
Range of properties from 400k to 650k near Didcot Parkway.

Basingstoke is a crap hole.

Beautiful and historical zone 8 Dartford! You lose access to the high speed line from Gravesend but you get the multiple routes to central London destinations including Thameslink (St. Pancras) and beyond.
