Commuter towns to London

Cheers for all the replies folks, I'll go through them in depth later, running against the clock atm. @Hades @ci_newman I work at South Kensington, Natural History Museum to be exact.
This is your 1 hour commute map https://app.traveltime.com/search/0...don, England, SW7 5BD, United Kingdom&0-tt=60

1h30m https://app.traveltime.com/search/0...don, England, SW7 5BD, United Kingdom&0-tt=90

2 hours https://app.traveltime.com/search/0...on, England, SW7 5BD, United Kingdom&0-tt=120

I personally couldn’t cope with more than an hour but if it’s infrequent then could push to 1h30m

Crazy how is takes ~1hr15mins to travel Southampton to Waterloo on the train, but you can do Chester/Crewe/Stafford to Euston in ~2hr/1hr40mins/1hr30mins respectively.

I'm not sure that those links are very accurate. I can drive from Basingstoke to Natural History museum in around an hour yet those links basically show you have to be well inside the M25 to do that.

Likewise for trains, you can get from Farnborough to the Musuem in < 1hr via train and those links don't show that.

It says based on public transport

Not cheap though. Chester to Euston would be my mainline journey (I've not been to our Chiswick Park offices since before covid) and from a quick look on trainline.com its £250-£300 standard class return to arrive at a sensible enough time to do a day of work.

Hertfordshire is nice, lived here most of my life.

So far I've lived in Harpenden, Hertford, Knebworth, Welwyn and now back in Hertford.

The new towns like Stevenage, Welwyn, etc are cheaper but not without social problems. I prefer the smaller towns and villages, although trains are not so great.

I've been pretty happy in Coulsdon these past few years, still being in Zone has it's benefits for sure.

I'm in beckenham, very nice village feely with awesome high street. 22 mins to Victoria, 27 mins to Blackfraier and 30 mins to London Bridge.

Beckenham Junction is a fantastic transport connection. With tram too!

St Albans! Both my partner and I commute into London and it’s very convenient with ThamesLink, M25 and M1 access. The city centre is lovely you’re spoilt for choice on pubs and good places to eat.

It’s dependent on the traffic at the time.

I think those times are accurate because they include the travelling either side of the station. It’s easy to make a commute seem short when you look at the station to station time but make it door to door and it goes up a lot.

One of the more expensive options though, no?

Lovely every time I've visited.

Hertfordshire is one of the obvious counties if looking north (Bedfordshire as well to some extent), plenty of lovely quaint towns and villages around. I'm not entirely convinced it's a 'bang for buck' county though (just look at St Albans) and rail links can be a pain unless you're near one of the majors (ie - Stevenage line, Bedford line etc).

Yes you have to ask yourself the question what's are you happy to commute in terms of time.

Some people are happy with 1-2hrs, others wouldn't be. I think all would prefer lower times though. That said coming back from London to a quiet, spacious home is lovely.

The Stevenage to Cambridge branch has lots of towns/villages with stations and are a **** lot cheaper than SnailBins
