Comodo still rated as firewall?

Hi there.

I currently have Norton Internet Security 2007 irritating me on my system ;)

I figured, seeing as it was on there, all bought and paid for, that I'd continue using it.

Now that the year is nearly up, I'm not going to use it any more.
I use Avast on my laptop, and am quite happy with it, so will install that on my Vista x64 system.

I also want a firewall program, that operates in a similar way to the Norton Firewall. The Norton firewall asks me every time a new program wants to access the net, and I can block it/allow it there and then.

The Windows firewall asks me sometimes, but certainly not for every programme.

So, having never used Comodo, but have read a little about it on here, I was wondering if it was still recommended as a software firewall by you folks, if it has a small footprint, and does a suitable job of asking the first time a program is run whether to give it net access or not?

If Avast and Comodo can do a suitable job, then I'll be glad to get rid of Norton from my system at last.

I've stuck with Norton thus far as it never USED to be such a big bloated hog, that took over your system. Years ago it just did the job I wanted, no probs. As the years have progressed, it added more and more, that thankfully could be disabled. But the 2007 version was simply awful. Taking too much control away from the user, and I just hate it. So, I look forward to a, hopefully, more friendly and responsive system after it's gone again... I just want a decent enough software firewall, as the Norton one did a good enough job.

I use Comodo on all my pcs and I've never had a problem. The only thing I would suggest is disabling defense+ (kind of like UAC in vista) if you're using comodo 3.0. It's not really needed if you know what you're doing, and doesn't really add any extra firewall protection.

Yes I still rate it as a firewall.

Damn right!

Thanks for the reccomendation just downloaded the Comodo Firewall ProVersion 3.0 with this and Avast will that cover everything i need security wise?

Or will i need Comodo Anti-Malware or anything else?

Personally I wouldn't bother. I'm using my laptop that my Mum uses when I am at Uni. I just run Comodo and Avast like you and that is that really. I do have Spybot and Spywareblaster and run them every so often.

If you are sensible about what sites you go on and what email attachments you open etc then you should be sorted. :)

Brilliant thanks.

Having never used it, I'll remember to disable that defence plus.

It is very annoying. Keeps asking me if I want this installer to create this temporary folder or not. Other things as well. Nice idea but not well received imho. There's probably some options to turn the annoying features of Defence+ off whilst keeping it on in general.

Sure.
I'm not interested in features like that anyway, in fact, I wanted to go with Comodo as I thought it was untainted by bloat?

I simply want a firewall, that would auto block software trying to connect to the net, giving me a pop up, asking whether to grant access, once, or indefinitely, just for peace of mind.

Anyway, I'll be giving it a go anyway, it can't be too bad, it's only 18mb ;)
Besides, Avast + Comodo can't be even a tad as bad as Norton for bloat these days ;)

Out of interest, when I come to uninstall Norton NIS 2007, before installing Avast + Comodo, is there any NEED to use that Norton Removal Tool I've read about in other threads?

I ask in here, as I guess maybe people using Comodo have previously used Norton?

I'm just concerned that using the Norton Removal Tool could possibly damage other software on my system? Is it fully Vista x64 compatible? (IE, some of the data files are stored in \users\username instead of \documents and settings\username, like they are in XP)

If the normal uninstall routine is good enough, I may just use that.

You can turn the Defence+ off. Heck you might even be able to turn it off in the install. :)

It has been a long while since I used Norton but I would use the removal tool just in case.

Comodo is better now than it has ever been. Apart from that Defender thing which i turned off. I have been using it for a good couple of years now alongside AVG free and install them on all pc's i have built. No need to buy any when these are so good.

I loved Comodo v2.4, but hated v3.0 :( I found it incredibly annoying... It kept forgetting rules, it was pestering me when anything on my computer happened, those temp files were very annoying. It kept trying to send files to Comodo which sometimes took 20 mins...
The options were all confusing, it was hard to navigate and I thought it had become very bloated... :(

I now use Online Armor which I find much better. It is so much eaiser to navigate and use. As soon as you install it, it gives you a list of programs to allow/deny which it does not recognise (It automatically creates rules for ALL Windows files and programs, as well as loads of other trusted programs like browsers, emails clients, MSN, etc, etc). It took about 3 minutes to do and after that it rarely bothered me at all.
It has some really nice feactures like easily being able to run any program "safer", it allows you to protect programs from termination, and it can even automatically restart terminated processes...
It also has a nice firewall status page which sits in the taskbar and is very clean and simple;

I do agree with you Zildjian. Comodo as a brand is excellent but I would say that 2.4 is probably that little bit better, just for the lack of Defence+.

Anyway is this Online Armour thing free?

Yes, they do a free version.

http://www.tallemu.com/online_armor_free.html

The free version came first in the Matousec firewall leak tests which is very impressive.

Both OA and Comodo offer very similar protection and they are both excellent firewalls -- I just personally found OA much more simple, eaiser to navigate, less annoying and lighter...
The developers are always on the Wilderssecurity forums helping people out and listening to the customers which I really like. It's good to have that kind of support.

cheers for that link... i too find comodo very pestering and it doesnt seem to remember any rules... shame really. will try this online armour.
