comp has died

From the picture above, it looks like you haven't plugged your power button back onto your motherboard, so when you push the power button, it obviously won't turn on :p

Failing that, I have exactly the same problem with an oldish comp here, all the lights on the motherboard are on but won't power up. It turned out to be a duff power supply so I'd check that first.

as mentioned previously it wasn't powering up before i disconnected the leads.. however they are all now back in place and still no luck :(

However my knight in shining armour by the name of Lyle is hopefully coming on sat to check out the psu... so i'll keep you posted

thanks for all you help so far :)

oh dear looks like my knight cant make it after all, so I'm still in desperate need of some help please???

Just to update on progress so far...

Its an E Machine approx 3 years old and wont power up. I do have a glowing green led on the motherboard.

Motherboard is Intel N232 E210882

I've cleaned it, reseated all the various components, checked the power leads etc. done the bit with the screwdriver and nothing happens.

General opinion seems to be a dead psu, but how can i be sure? I've no access to another pc and don't want to pay out for a new one without covering any other options.

If worse comes to worse and it is the psu, I've no idea what to buy or how much i should pay? i only use the pc for basic stuff, no games or anything complicated, so wouldn't want anything flash.

How difficult would it be to fit? my knowledge on these things is zilch :S but i am willing to learn!

Again apologies for not be able to check, hope you understand from email.

If you are looking at new PSU then no need to spend more than £30
Without listing the computer specs, I'd hazard a guess you'd need no more than 350W type.
I'd guess the following would suit your needs:
Antec Basic 350W

If you want a guide to installing the PSU then read on:

PSUs are held in place by (on the case in front of me) by 4 screws, i.e as shown here:
psu01.jpg

Turn off the power and remove the side panel. Trace all connections from the PSU and gently pull the molexs:
perif_Molex%20style%20power%20connector.jpg

from the back of the cd-drive and hard drive.

The 2 cables to the mainboard (ATX power connector & P4 12v power connector - see below for links) may have a little plastic tab thingy which needs to be pushed against the connector before removal.

Once that's done you can remove the screws and the PSU should slide 'out' of the computer - whilst holding the underneath of the PSU with one hand, use the other to slide the PSU further into the case. Eventually it should come out.

To install the new one do the reverse, starting by screwing the new one into place 1st.
You'll have wires going to various components (cd drive, hard drive) etc. these basically on fit one way round and push in/pull out.
There'll be 2 other connectors like this: ATX power connector and this: P4 12v power connector that will need to be connected to the motherboard also. The longer one usually has a clip thingy that prevents you from inserting the wrong way, (think it only fits one way anyhow), the square 12v connector will only fit one way.

The floppy connector: Floppy drive power connector does fit both ways round however should be fitted correctly else damage may occur!! As haven't fitted one for a while I can't remember which way round it's. Hope someone can post saying this??? :)

Hopefully haven't put you off doing this as it's kind of hard to explain without going long winded (i.e. what i've written ). It isn't as hard as what it may seem from the text. Even someone with no experience can do this in less than an hour I'd say (well we all started somewhere :p)

*edit* not sure of your case type, whether it's mAtx or Atx. No previous experience with e-machines so can't definitely say what cases they use.
Should think that the PSU I've listed would fit though.

*edit 2* Sorry for the lack of pictures, I was doing this late at night. Also if there are any mistakes in there.

Hey.. thanks for that.

I'm off to the local suppliers in the morning... ive googled the spec etc and am kind of confident of what i need so will be attempting to fit it in the afternoon.

I'll let you know how it goes. Wish me luck ;)

hmmm...

to me it looks like there is power going to everything, as if it is turned on at the mains switch but you havnt actually turned the pc on.

Try taking the front of the case off, (the plastic/metal front that should just pop off somehow) and look inside to make sure that when you press the power button it is actualy hitting the button itslef inside. if not, try hitting it with your finger to see if anything happens.

when you press the power button on your pc does it still make a click? or does if feel the same as it used too?

i personally fear you are wasting your money buying a new PSU, it certainly sounds like the above, or some kind of fualt with your power switch or the cables connecting the power switch on the case to the motherboard. (check they are fermly in place)

if its not that, or any of the things other people have already mentioned, i dont have a clue sorry. goodluck

have done all of the above, power switch is absolutely fine.. does what its supposed to and makes all the right noises.. cables are pushed firmly home.

having said that, i left the power lead plugged in overnight, and the psu is actually warm... so, before i rush off spending money unnecessarily, does that mean it could be working or not

i personally dont think the PSU is at fualt.

but i am no expert..

is there no way you could get access to a friends PSU just for a test? before you spend you money.

also, a question for other forum readers, could the CPU be at fualt??

update... been to my local friendly supplier who kindly tested the psu for me.

Turns out there is a fault on it thats intermittent. So i've purchased a new one and will attempt to fit it after i've had a coffee ;)

:( fitted the new psu.... still not working :(

now i'm completely at a loss.... maybe i should stick to baking cakes

any ideas anyone please?

Thats unfortunate. Perhaps your old PSU has killed your motherboard. Could you not let your friendly local supplier have a look at it or do they charge to much?

I've still got the green led on the motherboard, does that mean its OK?

I'm such a sceptic when it comes to repair people, hate the thought of getting ripped off etc. so would prefer not to go that route unless its really unavoidable.

Must admit I'm getting quite into this now and really appreciate the info given on here.
I'm willing to have a go but some of the technical terms are beyond me I'm afraid.

So keep the suggestions coming and keep it simple lol... my msn is in trust for anyone who wants to talk it through in more depth?

cheers....
