Having played around with video on my 5DmkII, I discovered just how long it takes to transfer files via my old USB Card reader :(

Just wondering what is the quickest Compact Flash Card reader available at the moment?

I'm using a Lexar USB 3.0 SD/CF card reader...fairly nippy ! (as long as you have USB 3.0 ports)

Ditto, £20 delivered, cant go wrong, i got one last week, super fast

even the USB2 version if you dont have USB3 is faster than a cheapo reader.

But nowhere near as fast as the Lexar USB3 one. I don't know what its actual limit is but it maxes out my 60MB/s Sandisk cards, averaging 58MB/s. Keep meaning to try it with a friend's 90MB/s ones.

thing is ,. how much can you get the usb2 one for? bearing in mind the usb3 one is just under £20 delivered.

Cant see usb3 making much difference at all, i think usb2 is pretty fast as it is.

from a review on a site

"Having bought a fast sandisk extreme 30MB/s SDHC card, I tried testing it only to find that my existing card read in the side of pretty new Dell monitor was only managing to write at 6MB/s and read at 8.5MB/s according to h2testw. I tested in in a laptops builtin card slot and managed to get 14MB/s read speed. Fearing a fake/rebadged card, I invested in a proper card reader. Since I only had USB2.0 ports I bought a usb3.0 card as well from the same vendor.

I needn't have worried with the latter. Even with the built-in usb2.0 ports, this card reader gave me 23.6MB/s write and 32.4MB/s read, a 4x improvement on my previous results. Since I have compact flash cards as well, this looks like the ideal reader for me. "

I've read (on the Lexar site) that this is compatible with USB 2 ports, but how fast is it via a USB2 port?

Anyone able to post comparison stats with it using USB2 vs USB3?

Just tried it with USB2 and it averages 25MB/s from a 60MB/s card, versus 58MB/s on USB3. So not shabby but still less than half the speed.

Tested with a photofast 32gb CF 533x

PhotoFast 32GB CF-533X conforms to CF Type I standards with a data transfer rate of read 80MB/sec (Max) and write 40MB/sec (Max).

PhotoFast 32GB CF-533X supports Ultra DMA mode 0-6 and high-end DSLR.

I think I get 30mb/s from the usb2 one. Not sure whether the usb3 one just runs a little slower on usb2?

Anyway, doesn't matter get either :D

Might get that usb3 one at some point, although it will only be used on usb2 until I upgrade. Would be pointless to buy the lower spec one at that price I guess...

Thanks again all for the replies, I ordered the Lexar USB 3.0 version as I have USB 3.0 and I hate the wait while transfering, and for £20 can't go wrong I guess.
