Company of Heroes : Playing Tips

Played this last night, had to play on easy as I kept getting severly owned :(

One point I had 3/4 of the map and was raking in points then suddenly swarms of AT guns and tanks would get launched at me.

THe skirmish AI on hard> Is ridiculous. I think they pull units ouut of thin Air personaly.

It also seems they get a damage boost, killing your unit faster.

me and a mate both came up with this idea independantly, it seems odd how my entire squad of rifles would sometimes be killed in a single burst of MG fire, not even pinned or suppressed and in good cover.

Its a good game but I never have time to fiddle with camera angles etc am too busy trying to get everyone everywhere.

So who plays infantry, airbourne or armour specialists?

Finally won (airbourne) :) pounded their tanks to poo with AT guns, damn good fun ;)

Thanks for all the tips they have added to my enjoyment of the game and their is certainly lots of stratery to it, defensive seems to be the way to play, tank traps, landmines and then once you start getting AT guns your home free!

Once you've got AT guns I didn't even bother with tanks just built up a huge battery of guns that tour the AXIS a new one, then with two captued points it was just a waiting game adding more and more AT guns.

If your playing against extreme then static defenses usually get killed off by arty, so you always need a reserve for when they punch through.

I normally play blitz / air just due to the speed you can get with them, the air drop anti tank gun is THE best unit in the game, forget the tiger, dropping an AT behind one is much cheaper than the cost of the tiger in the first place.

I like to turtle, hold the AI, then I just rush them when I have enough resources to keep a battline of shermans made and upgraded.

Tiger v Sherman + Wolverine = Sherman and Wolverine survive, Tiger does not. All about micro managing tank battles, the allies tanks are usually faster, turn better and more mobile, you CAN outrun the turning of the turret on the Tiger Ace if you are at the right distance, took one of those out with a Sherman although most of the shells just bounced off, new person on the beta.

Im getting bloody hammered on the bit where you got to hold the 3 bridges, allways end up pulling back to the church and get wiped out!

1) Do not put snipers in buildings. Once any unit is in any building then it is flaged to the enemy. Guarenteed, if they see it is a sniper, they will artillery fire it to guarentee killing him. they are just to lethal. Don't know why the game does this and I hope it changes, but for now just keep them out of buildings, cloaked and fire off.

4) Sticky bombs do a lot of damage to armour. Upgrade to get them soon and include a rifle squad with your sherman and two specialist squads.

7) Jeeps are good against snipers - build a couple and have them somewhere where you can deploy them fast.

1) (Spoiler) Not quite true.....On mission 4 (Carentan Counterattack) SP you need at least 1 team of sniper+mg team, in the house right next to the right-hand side fuel point, due to the pathing a good deal of troops will take this way to reach the church.

4) Agreed, they do do a fair bit of damage, but on some missions, you are severly limited to munitions points. I find it better to use what munitions you have on AT guns.

7) Jeeps are a total waste of time IMHO, just get your Sniper to find out where their Sniper is and mortor him to death ;) Why waste precious pop points on Jeeps when they can be better spent building either more Infantry or Armour.

I am of course, refering to the SP campaign of the full game, which I completed all 15 missions in 3 days. Thats how addictive this game is :D

mine th hell out of the bridges and then a 10 meters past

mg bunker on each bridge 2 at guns on middle 2 on right left 1 if u have time

mgs in the closets buildigns to the bridges sniper with the mg if u have time

wire all over the bridge sandbags all where u will be firing until the 1st lot of arty .
Infact as soon as they arty u mayaswell pull out all the AT guns and retreat on all soldiers left alive and get them reenforced.

The AI is thick the Stugs will shell the bunkers and 2 AT guns only take about 15 seconds to nail one. The soldiers dont even count they are dead so fast.

i found it pretty easy really.. but i have played a lot of RTSs over the years.

Cool thanks for that mate, I will put this little plan into opertation toot sweet, many thanks. :D

thought the demo was ace, deffo getting the game ;)

they could have included a better map i thought. Reminds me of playing sudden strike, but at least that had a map with a clear 1v1 - 2 islands style scenario. This map is very open, and you dont seem to have enough units to cover your front.

Very addictive!!! :D. I was refering to the MP and skirmish part of the game - have not really played the single player demo of the campaign mode. Will play on full release though. I have found on MP or skirmish that when you have a unit in a building it is flagged to the opposite team and vice versa. IMHO this completely removes the point of putting your squad in a building for an ambush. I think that you should have been able to put a team in a building and it only gets flagged to the opposite team once you open fire on them. What does everyone else think. My mates and I have taken to not garrisoning troops in buildings for this reason. Sure - put them in when they are being fired upon, but you should be able to create some neat ambushes if this was not flagged earlier on.

Fair point on the jeeps, I use snipers on snipers as well but the jeeps are handy to have if a sniper is no where near where the enemy sniper is and you wanna get there quickly.

Do hope that there are more maps in the full release - only 48 hours to go!!! :p

or if they try and enter the building, perhaps it's worth saying on their forum.. it may get added into a patch

two replays of allied infantry v's expert..
easy way, take and cut the island and hold at the base bridge:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dabar/ocuk/coh/expert-quick-art.zip
harder way, take and cut off the island and also take the north-west house:
http://homepage.ntlworld.com/dabar/ocuk/coh/2p_semois.2006-09-26.19-50-56.zip

the second one should be the best for entertainment.. the first is just statistically effective.

Edit:
extract the replay files to 'My Documents\My Games\Company of Heroes Single Player Demo\playback'

Anyone tried the Axis...the Germans are amazingly powered with tanks and arty and their troops. A few SDK's armed up with rocket launchers aimed at a position can desimate the americans. If you can get the church point and get in these SDK's, you can rip the americans base to pieces. Keep the americans pinned whilst you built up a few tanks and bring in some arty.

i love the germans, the 88's are so powerful :D

i also love the cheapest german tank, i forget what its called but it has a rapid fire anti tank gun, not the best against shermans but they fire pretty rapid, took over the whole map with just 2 against a hard computer.

The detail in this game is amazing, I'd owned the AXIS and just spent lots of time messing around with the camera angles etc, I normally just play it in normal top down RTS mode.

the amount u guys seem to play skirmishes dissapoints me... ai will never be a challenge, they can spam units.. but will not use any real strategy to beat you... online against real people is the only true way to play the game

and online hiding behind ** wall of defenses will last about 10 seconds against the majority of people

building defenses is useful... game i had yesterday my opponent barb wire / tank trapped pretty much everywhere ... was very effective at stopping my advance unil i got a sniper to take out his at guns and a croc to run over his d

defense is only a stall tactic though, it will never win the game for you as you spend too much cash reinforcing your lines and not enough pushing forward gaining territory
