Behind you... Naked!
Just wondering really.

clock for clock, surely the 1366 ( i7 that is ) will be a slightly faster CPU, given that its a newer architecture?

If so, how much better, or is it?

Just a thought.

My eldest son has a 1156 i7 and Im looking at a 1366 i7 for my youngest son, and they are both 2.8Ghz... The Processors that is, not the boys.

Thanks guys.

It depends what i7 on the 1156 chipset,I think the I7 860 was pretty similar to the I7 920 performance wise but x58 offered better usb3/sata3 and pcie 16x over the 1156 boards

No difference at all in 99% of the case, 1336 can pull a head slightly in memory bandwidth heavy tasks due to triple channel memory compared to dual channel on 1156.

1156 is newer...............
1366 is SB-E, 1156 is SB if we were to compare them to todays line.
Do you still have a 95W 1055T you bought on the MM :p?

Oh heck, I posted a reply already.. I must have done my usual of simply not sending and moving on to another page!

Ah well.

The current 1156 is on a Gigabyte P55-USB3 which I love to bits and was my first I7
The 1366 is on a Foxconn x58 Fire lighter or whatever it is and yeah its tri0ple channel.

So triple channel is going to be better then? Ok, I was 50-50 on that... Never given anything much thought as for me, I dont do odd numbers. Even my old AMD Triple core made me feel uneasy.

Thanks for the linx

Yup. Running in my main Media center right now, in a Gigabyte 970A-DS3 and running a treat might I add.
Its bit of a monster isnt it? - I love it.

the trouble with most 1156 boards is that if you use usb3 or sata3 it reduces the pcie lane to 8x bandwidth

you don't get that with x58,you have 2 full lanes with 16x speed,id pick 1366 everytime

Yes, it was a monster.
My monster :(

:p

WAS your monster... its now MY monster...

ha ha ha ha haha haha ha ha ha

Given a choice yes, I would go with 1366 over 1156, but the fact is, that I already have a 1156 and so the 1366 will be a great upgrade so both my boys will have similar setups again.

My monster :(

I repeat... WAS

ho ho ho ho hoooo.....

Would you like pics of her?

Id say that 1156 seems a little harder to come by so might be more expensive? But that cost might be offset by the extra stick of RAM required for 1336.

I've always wondered what the performance difference between a 930 and 860 as they were the same clock right? When i bought my 860 in 2009 the 1336 was much more expensive so looks like i made the right choice!

The 1156 i7's are actually slightly faster than the 1366 i7's for gaming (clock for clock) as they have lower memory latency due to the newer controller (1156 i7's are actually newer tech than 1366 ones).

But that cost might be offset by the extra stick of RAM required for 1336.

Just for reference, neither X58 or X79 require you to fill the channels, you can fill up to one/two/three channels or four on X79. This is actually quite useful to know as tri-channel actually makes 0 difference over dual channel on X58 unless your doing synthetic work on a hex core (the quads cannot saturate the dual channel bandwidth) and a 2x4GB kit is cheaper (or was) than a 3x2GB one.

Ok, its been a short while, so I thought Id add a post before it wanders off into obscurity.

Done a couple of things to both the I7 systems.

Both are running a pair of Mushkin RAM, the same stuff at the same speeds etc.
Both running a GTX470 - again a matching pair from my SLI setup.
Both have Windows 7/64 installed, with the very same drivers with the obvious exception of the motherboard drivers obviously, and I have also added an Audigy 2 ZS cos I have 2 of those .

Anyway, I have run a number of benchmarks and I must say that there is absolutely ZERO difference in performance between the two

Even as much as running SuperPI MOD 1.5 they scored 14.030 for the 1156/860 and 14.339 for the 1366/930
I run a fairly wide range of benches, and the results did fluctuate a little, but then they often do even when running on the same system, but the basics are that all results showed the systems to be on par within an error margin of absolutely no more than a couple of %
3DMark2001, 2003, 2006, 110, AquaMark3, Furmark, Unigene Heaven 4, Passmark, Prime95 and SuperPI all showed pretty much the same scores, and also converting Video files from AVI to MPG in both single core, and multi-core modes.
They are as I say... the same.

Now, the Mushkin are 2 Black and 2 Yellow, and they are the same spec etc but 1.5v and 1.65v - might make a difference to triple channel, and my AMD Hex Core Media Center has 4x2GB so I will plop 3 of those in to see about triple channel, but yeah, 4 Core CPU wont benefit from triple channel as opposed to a 6 core CPU surely?

I think what I am simply going to do, is try to flog off the 1156 CPU & Board, and the 1366 CPU and get a 980X 6 Core I7 plonked in there.
