Comparing a64 to conroe (exactly how better is it)

When people say conroes will be great etc, exactly how much better is it than what is out now, i mean, is it so much better that the cheapest conroes willl rival the most expensive amd processors? And how much is the cheapest conroe, how much better is it?

simply put, its similar to the AMD64 vs. netburst thing, AMD won that but not by a stupid amount, only 10% or so, so i think regardless of what the conroe fanboys say, its nothing spectacular, don't see it a worthy upgrade myself to be honest

Exactly that, I think the cheapest one will be under £150:

Rough estimate (low end to high end)

E6300 @ 1.86GHz - £140?
E6400 @ 2.13GHz - £180?
E6600 @ 2.4GHz - £250? (this is gonna be the one to go for)
E6700 @ 2.66GHz - £380?
X6800 @ 2.93GHz - £700?

Apparently the E6400 can perform as well as an FX60!

but you can get X2 for not much more and clock it to FX60 speeds, so i still vouch theres nothing at all incredible about conroe, not enough to warrant all the hype going on in this forum

Edit: not to mention AMD motherboards tend to cost less than intels counterpart, so you can't forget to take that in the equation

Of course you need to add the price of a mobo and ddr2 although some boards may use ddr1, which would bring it upto or more than the price of a fx60 :) however the 775 will be around for quite some time.

fenderbass86 I think all your estimates of price is about 40-50 too much, i could be wrong but from what ive ready the low end CPU you have on that list should be about £100 and there is a even lower version the E4200 i think its called, this will be 1.6Ghz and use 40W unlike the typical 65W of the rest

but all i was trying to say is its not just down to performance, theres nothing particularly brilliant about conroe over X2 processors, and 939 systems have life in them yet, TBH everyone is jumping into conroe far too blindly and with some, it makes no sense, i see people with 3.0Ghz opterons and X1900XTXs ready to blow a lot of money on an entirely new system, for 10% or so more performance, and nothing really spectacular technological wise. hell my best mate matt runs pentium 4 prescott processor, if he said he was gonna blow money on AMD64 system for the sake of a few FPS in games or more 'points' in a benchmark program, i would have to give him a clip on the head and say hes off his head. his pentium 4 is more than enough for any game around at the moment, if anything he should upgrade his graphics. people need to take a deep breath and calm down, theres not much between them in the real world people

tbh people with current high end system need not replace but the people with high end system usually like to keep very modern and as conroe will be a fair margin better than the current X2 then they want to upgrade, but your right current high end systems have a lot of life still in them

Really, I don't, this is the UK you know!

I for one do need a new system, still on AGP and it's generally poor overall, some generic stuff thrown in to save money. My own fault.

agreed but i have seen a UK price list and they are lower than that, i dont know how accurate it is so i cant argue with you but lets hope they are cheap!! :)

agreed,

But the temptation to clock a conroe E6600 to 3.4ghz will offer staggering performance.

The 2.66 conroe is faster than a overclocked FX 60 so imagine the performance with an overclocked conroe!

Thats what all the excitement is about

thing is like they always do reviews tend to b biased and ive read that they wont b as fast as originally thought like they said about the ps3 its all pieces of paper till theyre actually out and no doubt amd will have something similar.

AMD have nothing that will compete for the imediate future Intel will have the lead, im not sure when K8L is coming but again intel have the kentsfield release on 6 months time so AMD will have a fight on their hands also intel are starting a price war AMD can ill afford with CPUs being their only market!

I think a lot of Intel fanboys went AMD and now they have a reason to go back to Intel, I have always prefered Intel but Amd are better for now. I go with what is the best at the time.

yeah tell me about it easyrider, the performance of highly overclocked conroe will be off the current scale, i just wish people would quit all this AMD doom crap and get over the potential of conroe. this is all turning out to be a bit of a wayne rooney, and a bit of a michael owen. looks great on paper, and the benchmarks show there both brilliant strikers, but when it matters niether of them have really done it. too all you AMD doomers, look at the PS3, its significantly faster on paper than the X-box 360, but has microsoft got a flop on there hands, i don't bloody thinks so. it'll be the exact same with AMD/intel, sure conroe offers good perfomance, beyond AMDs current generation processor, but look at netburst, and intel are still live and kicking

I don't think the price slashing from AMD will do much tbh, if it's happening the day after conroe. Too many people want to get their hands on a Conroe, me included.

lol im happy with my 939 system (might get X2 3800+ mind) until later this year when 65nm AM2 chips come around

I agree with you but fanboyism has little to do with the fact that people are excited that a very good new core, whether you like intel or not (personally i couldnt give rats a**s) you cannot deny the fact that intel is coming out with a new and very impressive core when you consider its speed efficiency etc. imo to buy a AMD based machine now is a bit silly because intel are releaseing conroe in about amonth and retailing them at far far less than AMDs current CPUs
lets face it intel fanboys would usually stay with intel and not go AMD otherwise they aint fanboys!
