Comparing a64 to conroe (exactly how better is it)

Fanboyism has nothing to do with it,And quite frankly anyone who is for one company over another is a numpty IMO.

I get the cpu that offers the fastest performance regardless who makes it.I have had intel before but my opty rig blew that away. Now it will be intels turn.

I will get a conroe even though I already have a kick ass system. But it won't cost me anything afer selling my current mobo chip and ram,

So I can have the fastest again but at no cost.
Thats what I like about pc hardware sell some bits and get a new fix! :D

I don't think the price slashing from AMD will do much tbh, if it's happening the day after conroe. Too many people want to get their hands on a Conroe, me included.
I think they will do very well, at least in the short term, if Intel concentrate on supplying OEM's first. This will mean hardly any Conroe CPU's available to the public and those that do make it, will be going at a very inflated price. On the other hand, plenty of very cheap AMD's offering amazing bang-for-buck performance.

what i mean is Intel are far better placed to be making the supersized cuts they are now due to the fact that they have lots of fat little fingers in lots of different markets and so therefore the lessening of profit in the home CPU market is not going to have a far reaching effect on their overall profits. but AMD on the other hand are still a relativly small firm in comparison with CPUs being there very main market, so the huge decrease on the price of CPUs will hit their profits quite hard

thing is nobody here works making chips for amd so you dont know what they got up there sleaves and if they did know they wouldnt b bragging on here lets wait and see i use the ps3 as example the quoted specs and the specs its actually gun a be is quite different now hope it is very fast cause we will get better cpus for better prices. :D

I am no intel fanboy and I am very excited for conroe.

The 2.66ghz one is equiv to a 3.2ghz FX60. They should clock to 3.2ghz fairly easily on air and thats equiv to about a 3.6ghz FX and will be stupidly fast.

And the price will be very much cheaper than the FX60 (unless AMD slash prices).

its nothing we haven't seen before im afraid, remember not long back, when 2.0Ghz athlon was creaming 3.2+Ghz pentiums left right and centre, new architecture, intel has had a stupid amount of time to come up with something, its about time they dug there heads out of the sand and showed why there the biggest chip company around for a change, and example of conroes demise in a few months proberbly knowing the computer world, look at the jaguar E type, fastest car around in its day, compair it to a maclaren F1, no competition, but the F1 gets creamed by bugatti veyron, so its a never ending cycle of just getting faster and faster, conroe won't by a longshot be king for long

what, is that fact?, how much would it cost to buy a new mobo a 2.66 and 2 gigs of ram?

come on eliot lets be realistic, the s939 is a dying breed while still currently very good even AMD has moved to DDR2 now so it is unfair to be competing prices of RAM within the equation aswell if your going to that then compare the AM2 socket which also requires DDR2

I'm not directing this at anyone in particular, but it's getting a bit annoying when you see certain people constantly moaning and slating Conroe. Intel have a killer chip on their hands, moaning won't change that. You expect us to sit around talking about "old school" socket 939? I don't think so. Of course there's going to be hype about Conroe...it whoops everything AMD offers at a fraction of the price. People need to give Conroe some slack and stop being grumpy about it. I bet if you were hypothetically upgrading your entire PC next month, you would buy Conroe and not socket 939 :p

And don't forget that a lot of people don't even have 939 rigs and are still using older rigs. Obviously you'd buy Conroe because it has a better price/performance ratio. Besides, most people with 939 rigs can sell their current gear and switch to latest cutting-edge gear without spending too much money. Enthusiasts like bleeding-edge. Conroe is bleeding-edge, socket 939 is not.

And I'm not a fanboy, I own and use AMD and Intel CPUs.

Same here! I have a crappy rig! And though I have the money to buy a great 939 rig now, im waiting for Conroe, BEST bang for buck. :)

I could get a nice x2, I have a good 939 system, but I cant help feeling that AMD will stop production of the 939 soon in favour of the AM2, so the £200+ I was going to spend on a 4800x2 will go towards a 6700, and I will be buying into a ongoing socket 775. Where can you go from a x2 4800 or fx60 in 8 months time ? nowhere I think. but you could upgrade to a better conroe in 8 months time. But if you cant afford a conroe its a win win situation as the x2 will have nice prices.

Well, apart from AMD's roadmaps that clearly show what they have coming up until 2008 or so...

If people want to know WHY Conroe is going to be so much faster, I can dig out the threads where we discussed the cpu architecture if people want... Conroe is the first actual architecture that's properly interested me in a while.

i won;t buy into conroe that quick. im gonna wait for its chipsets to mature. look at nforce3 it was crappy compared to nforce4 and now the real good chipsets are out now.

early adoption is a mistake in my eyes, your nothing but beta testers.

i personally think its about how much money you have to burn

if you are quite well off, then theres no reason to not get conroe, regardless of what system you have now, as it simply will be the best out

but if like me, you dont have money to burn, then the NEED to upgrade simply is not there. My Winnie 3000 @ 2.66 does everything i need to do fine. I cant afford to get a new cpu/mobo/ram just for a bit faster system, which i dont need. Im gona get the cheapest X2 when prices drop to give me a boost.
