Comparing CRT and LCD screen resolutions

I've noticed that quite a few LCD screen s have lower max resolutions than their CRT counterparts. For example, the BenQ FP91G+ 19" LCD Monitor has a max resolution of 1280x1024, when a 19" CRT monitor would have a max resolution of 1600x1200. To my mind, that seems that the move to a LCD is a downgrade - it would be like running 1280x1024 on a 19" CRT and graphics would look less defined.

Another example is with 20" and 22" LCD monitors, which often have the same max resolution. For example, the Belinea 102035W is a 20" screen with a resolution of 1680 x 1050, yet Belinea's next biggest model - the Belinea 2230S1W Pro 22" also has a resolution of 1680 x 1050.

Does this matter? Should I be looking to get a monitor that matches screen size and native resolution as much as possible?

I'd guess yes.

But I'm sure a lot of the more knowledgeable folk on here will give you a more concise answer. ;)

I'm using a 22" CRT but am on the verge of buying a 24" Dell 2407. From what I understand, you get the best picture quality when you run a LCD monitor at its native resolution.

On my CRT I play a lot of games at 1600x1200 @100Hz so to keep my existing frame rate similar(?) the best picture quality would be from a LCD monitor with a 1680x1050 native resolution (Question mark as I'm not sure how the fixed 60hz refresh on LCDs affects that...)

On the Dell 2407 the native resolution is 1920x1200. So to get the best image quality I should be running my games at that res. If I run them at 1680x1050 then the image will be slightly "stretched" to fit.

I've been told that stretching the image to fit the native resolution will make the image appear slightly "blurrier" (by how much and if its noticeable on games, I don't know yet!) That's not a problem with a CRT. The only trouble being they're not manufactured anymore... :(

let me tell you what ive just had and now got....

in 2000 I bought a Sony G200 17" CRT, the MAX res is 1600x1200, but the recomended res is 1024x768, so i left it at that 100Hz

NOW in 2007 I have just bought an LCD 22" widescreen monitor that has a native (max res) of 1680x1050 and I am VERY happy with my purchase.
ok so i didnt use 1600x1200 on the CRT becuase you couldnt see jack! (the ttext is far too small)

you wont regret going to a TFT

And Welcome to Overclockers mate :)

hay zulu,

A while back i had the same reservations, in the end i decided to bite the bullet and baught a 23" lcd monitor (HP F2304), it was rather expesive at the time due to its high res (1920x1200).

I have had no problems at all, playing COD2 say i can run it in various resolutions (up to 1920x1200) at 60hz and the effect is fine.

I have no regrets what so ever!!

The thing to remember is that the maximum resolution of a CRT is what the electronics will cope with, rather than the screen itself. In reality, you wouldn't be able to run the top resolution without losing some detail as the dot pitch won't be fine enough to resolve every pixel.
