Comparing old tech to new stuff?

if you look in my sig below you can see what im running at the moment and the scores i achieved when i went benching with it.

Those scores were from december 2005 so as u can imagine they are a bit slow buy standards of today.

Its been a while since ive looked at cpus and clocking etc so im a bit out of touch

So say x1900 in crossfire, how much power together would that equate to as one of the new ati cards?

and my cpu, a 26sec super pi time, where does that stand roughly in the level of new intels......from what im starting to look around im guessing the lowest one?

When i get paid im planning on upgrading my system, first a board, cpu and ram......then later down the line the cards, hence ill need a crossfire board

im thinking q6600 and clocking it, any suggestions for ram and board?

Well I know that 1 4850 is basically twice the performance of the X1900XT. Well according to Tom's Hardware, the 4850 has better performance than X1900XT CF'd. Actually quite impressed they've updated their charts. Was about time.

Edit: As for CPU's my E8400 at stock pulls out a 15sec 1M Pi time and overclocked to 3.8, 11sec. A friends Q6600 @ 3.5 produces 14seconds, I believe.

For ram, I may be told I'm wrong, but I'm really loving my Geil Black Dragon PC-6400, it's 800MHz stock and with 2.2V happily runs at 1050Mhz, so loads of overclocking room on the ram. As for board this is pretty depends on price range, if you want cheap obviously P35 is the way to go, if you've got a bit more money to splash X38 would be good, especially if you're looking to keep crossfire for a while/have it again with newer ATi cards. Can't really tell you what makes and boards as I don't have much knowledge in that sector, but hope this helps. :)

from that toms review i have a rough idea at what level i stand at now, the only reason i wanna upgrade is DOW2 is coming next year and i run a 28" monitor so need a bit more power

I did think about waiting for nehalem but i think i might wait till that gets released and get this tech as it should be really cheap i would hope


Ive heard about that ram being mentioned so ill do some googling and see what people are getting from it

anyone else giving advice on which board to choose

not saying you're wrong here, but that seems like a lot of volts there? I have the same ram doing the same speed at stock 1.9 volts? What timings are you running on it? I've cropped mine to 5-5-5-15 so perhaps you've managed to keep 4-4-4-12?
