OcUK are happy to provide the resources of these forums to responsible individuals without charge. They cost a substantial amount of money to maintain and use considerable amounts of bandwith which is paid for exclusively by OcUK. As you know OcUK are in the computer hardware business and therefore the promotion of OcUK's competitors is forbidden. Examples of promotion are :-

= Posting links to competitors websites
= Posting links to reviews that promote competitors
= Quoting the names or contact details of competitors
= Offering to provide the names or contact details of competitors
= Hinting about product availability at competitors and their pricing
= Using the forums to notify a member of intent or actual supply of names or contact details of competitors
= Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in signatures
= Listing competitors names, URL's or e-mail addresses in profile
= Posting links to or the mentioning of auction sites
= Disguising attempts to do any of the above

Those are the forum rules taken from the FAQ.

As you will all see OcUK is making a push into consoles. To bring this section inline with the other sections and the rules it is now obvious that any store which sells console hardware, aswell as the normal PC hardware is considered a competitor.

This means the three big game named based stores are no longer allowed, neither are any other places if they sell console hardware.

I hope this is clear to people and that you can accept to follow these rules, they are not up to debate on here and any questions you may have should be directed towards my email or MSN, in trust and FAQ.

Please respect these rules, if you agree with them or not they are the rules in place and they now apply to a wider range of shops than before.

What no O RLY?

What don't get is this, we all know these competitors exist, so what's the advantage of censoring them?

Because it's the rules. If you want to post here you observe them. If you don't then you aren't welcome. Simple choice.

I think some people forget the fact that these forums are linked to an actual business and is not just run by someone wanting a community alone.

Yes but it's not as if me mentioning a major competitor is going to harm OCUKs business in any way, unless I start making posts about how cheap or better other competitors are.

The fact is that any publicity is good publicity.

He is right.

This OcUK's house, so house rules apply.

Plenty of other gaming forums not associated with a shop you can go to.

Huge ones infact, Gamespy maybe...

My goodness.... these arguments are getting stupid. Why do people really care that you cant mention jimbobs awesome pc store that is doing 95 percent discount today only :/

Isnt the real purpose of the forum to discuss the consoles good points and strong points, not the best place to buy the consoles... since everyone keeps on mentioning that the most "famous" shops are so known, then people can look at them for the deals. The only thing that I will miss is the 10 percent off codes that was posted on occasion.

I hope this place seattles down a bit. There seems to be more arguments than actual talk recently :(

What if there's a link to a competitor within a page linked to on here? Say if you link to a game review, or a news site, and it happens to link to a shop from there?

That's the way things work round here though. I mean, there's nothing actually illegal about saying "I downloaded this game/film/tv series and I think it's good/rubbish/meh" either, but that's a no-no too.

Just saying, before I get the stock "If you don't like it, leave" response.

So I take it this includes shops that primarily sell DVDs, CDs, etc. but also sell console hardware? If that's the case, does it only apply to this forum or does it apply to music & box office as well?

Depends on the size of the advert.

If its a small note at the bottom its fine, or a small advert that you have to look for. The adverts change so often its impossible to moderate.

If the review / preview has a full page spread thanking a competitor, then your best copying the review over without that part. :)

I don't want to ban you. I'd prefer it if everyone had adhered to the rules in the first place and it wouldn't have ever come to this.

As it is now we've had to clamp down hard because so many people were taking liberties. And it really is a case now of either adhere or leave. We have been left no choice.

Ok dude, will do.

I suppose one doesn't have to be super cynical to see whats going on here.

Nothing complicated but we do not work for the shop.

Stock queries and pricing are issues only the shop can resolve, telling moderators will get nothing done.
