I'm using Linux Mint, and haven't really fiddled around with settings too much yet - it's pretty much default on everything. I tried playing some videos, but it flickered. I managed to stop the flickering by turning compiz desktop effects completely off. Is there a way to keep compiz running without the videos flickering?

Try setting your video player to use X11 video output. It works nicely for me using VLC.

Other players have similar settings if you prefer using them instead. Everybody's got a favorite and I don't want to make it seem like you have to switch.

I had this same problem with my 4870. Have to use x11. Totem, VLC & mplayer can all be set to x11 easily. if anyone needs to do it just search the forum for my thread a few weeks back.
