I am wanting to send an email of complaint regarding a recent experience at the 'genius bar' in the Metrocentre - but can't for the lift of me find one. Anyone got any email addresses of any of the head honcho's?

It's a long story. Basically I have bought 2 iphones from new direct from Apple at full release day cost. I have always looked after them as best I can. The home button on my iPhone 4 is now unusable due to dust inbetween the contacts. I have been told this is a common issue. I was refused a replacement as my phone is out of warranty. I sat at the bar open mouthed while not one, but two people (both female I have to add) had their phones replaced for brand new units out of warrenty without question. One had left it on their car roof, and drove off. It was totally mangled. The other dropped it in a cup of tea.

It is this which riled me, understandably I feel.

Book another appointment or try another store if possible. It understandable you're annoyed, I would not have left the bar unescorted myself!

I know a guy who had the screen (well lid) on his MBA replaced free of charge when he decided to have a go at fixing it himself, not knowing the MBA doesn't have a traditional laptop screen as such. First appointment they said no, it will be £450 to fix or something like that, the second they just said no problem, we'll replace the lid for you!

It depends which employee you get tbh, if you get a new member of staff everything must be done by the book, get one thats been there a while and they fairly lenient. Just rebook until you get it replaced.

Its hardly something to complain about, your getting exactly what you paid for, its out of warranty. Any other company wouldnt ever touch it without you paying.

Of course it's something to complain about! You can't treat one person one way, and another differently just 'because'. You either say 2 year warrenty or 1 year warrenty no exceptions. Not 1 year warrenty, but if you're a fit blonde who has her puppies out a little bit, we'll make an exception and give you a new unit.

Could not disagree more - if the 2 girls were denied replacements than you may have a point.

But they weren't so you don't.

They did that in front of you and then refused you with a common problem like that...

I would have gone bonkers, Get the manager out and give it all that and definitely would have not left without a fix/replacement.

My situation is similar, i took a white macbook in (non unibody) wich has severe burning discolouration issues (reasonably common problem, the heat turns the white panels very brown after a long time of use)

obviously it was out of warranty and i went in knowing i wouldnt pay for it but its an apple fault, its not my fault so hoping they would replace it, if they didn't wasn't a huge problem to me as it is purely cosmetic

got in the guy looked at it as if this was a brand new problem and was obviously because i had mistreated the laptop and basically said no, as he was talking to a collegue about it after i said that it was a known issue with them i overheard the girl next to me with a unibody MBP that was also out of warranty but the bottom lid was scratched and her rubber feet had fallen off, and they took it off her for a free replacement bottom casing

No feet defiantely looks a whole lot nicer than a white and brown streaked laptop i tell you that...
Anyways im going to try a differant store

Although some have commented about it being out of warranty and whatnot, there's a rather nice piece of consumer law that says the item you pay for should have a decent life in comparison to what you paid for it.

So if you paid a fiver for a toaster and it broke after 2 months, no big deal. If you paid £300 for a games console that doesn't last 18 months, you should get it sorted by the retailer.

I used exactly the same method to get my launch 360 swapped after it had the RROD 18 months after purchase ;) A letter to the retailer mentioning the particular section of the law was required however. Can't remember what section it was, but some Googling would bring up the right thing no doubt.

As such getting your phone sorted by Apple should be fine regardless it being 'just' beyond warranty.

Sales of goods act is what you are looking for. You got fobbed off, there is no such thing as a " 1 year warranty" when you buy something in this country. The law states that the item should last for a "reasonable (as decided in a court if it goes that far)" lifetime. 18 months is not reasonable in this instance.

I have to say, I find it very hard to believe apple store replaced a phone driven over or dipped in a tea, with or without warranty. We don't have AppleCare+ in UK, therefore UK sourced phones are unlikely to be replaced under accidental damage clause. Most of us wouldn't bother with extra phone insurance if you could just walk into any apple store and admit you forgot the phone on the roof of your car and drove away, let alone months after warranty expired.

If anything, it's the other round, iphones have white water sensitive strip that many owners managed to trigger red simply by keeping the phone in soaked jeans pocket on the rain and their warranty was immediately void, so the story about someone dropping their phone in a cup of tea and getting replacement sounds like an urban myth girls would make up to not admit they had to fork out few hundred quid over something stupid they done in a pub.

Apple refused to replace your out of warrenty phone, i fail to see what you are complaining about. Women get things for free or on good will a lot of the time. As a guy you should know this....

I know Apple replace some things out of warranty they did for me and my phone. But it's rare that they sort someone out who dropped it or put it near water. I'd go back like everyone's said and try another employee.
