Hi and Good Evening All

As the title suggests while i am an avid PC gamer im completely new to the process of building gaming systems and in the past have either bought store built systems or used older rigs bought off my uncle who is a enthusiast.

As the new games such as BF3 etc are coming out i was tempted to get another pre built rig to keep up with friends etc but after talking with said uncle, being told to read magazines such as Custom PC and visit forums such this ive been inspired to build my own system which should also allow me to get more bang for my buck but also be able to make it much more individual (more lights than blackpool :D .)

Which brings me to my current situation. As some very belated xmas gifts i had a rather nice box arrive from OCuk with the following in

PSU: OCZ Z- series 850W
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
SSD: OCZ agility 3 60GB
Optical drive: 2x Samsung bluray drives
Roccat Iksu Keyboard and Kone+ mouse
Copy of Windows 7

Which brings me to where i should go to next. As i said im a complete novice while i have a rough idea of what i want i have no real clue if anything or everything will work together. I was hoping if i made a list of my proposed rig then maybe a few more people in the know could steer me in the right path or point out some stupid mistakes.

Mobo System:

I was looking at the OC pre overclocked bundles as a pre- clocked system would be easier for me as i would not know where to start. my two choices were

or

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=BU-073-OE&groupid=43&catid=2053&subcat=2064

at time of ordering id like to upgrade to 8 GB or even 16GB depending on cost.

GFX system:

ive been looking at the various GFX threads on the forum and while i understand the crossfire amd cards certainly look like great choices my previous experience with amd/Ati cards has not been great and id prefer to stick with Nvidia.

My biggest choice is whether to spend £500 on a card such as the Asus Matrix 580 or the MSI lightening extreme
or should i look to get a pair of cheaper GTX 580's (gainwood "good" for eg) and Run them together.

Case:

Im completly confused by cases to be fair, size shape etc for my system. I do have access to a Akasa Eclipse 62 but i fancy a newer case such as the white cosair 600Tm but will that be to small and run to hot. Other choices include the new CM trooper or the Raven-01 (leading at the mo)

finally have i missed anything something obvious. I will choose a new 27" monitor closer to the system being build depending on what deals are on at the time.

Cheers for any opinions on these choices or whether there is better out there.

what's your budget for the cpu/mb/ram/cooler? going by the links its £380 but are you able to stretch?

buy mb/ram/cooler seperately and do the overclocking yourself as its not too hard(have
a look in the overclocking section of the forums for help or someone may reply on here, I've not finished my build yet so not had any experience with ocing sandybridge so can't advice at the moment).

cpu http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CP-360-IN&groupid=701&catid=6&subcat=1275

mb http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-054-AK

if thats too much http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-191-MS&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1990

both have pci-e3.0 compatibility so you can upgrade to ivybridge + pci-e3.0 graphics card in the future without having to change motherboards.

if you don't need the future proofing http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-368-GI&groupid=701&catid=5&subcat=1990

ram http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MY-094-KS&groupid=701&catid=8&subcat=1517

cooler http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-001-GD&groupid=701&catid=57&subcat=1395

case is personal choice but have to say I love the eclipse-62(best of the 3 I've used over the last 5yrs) tho unfortunatelly its being used in the pc downstairs, think its better than the cosmos s I'm currently building my new system in(bought the case april/may 2008 and wish I hadn't, its been sat unused since september 2008 so thought I'll make use of it).

graphics card wise you could spend all that money now or with the new cards coming out in 3-6months you could go for a cheaper option and upgrade to the new card/s when they're released.

processor + mobo + ram + cooler: agree with above, buy separately and overclock yourself. i5 2500k + asrock Z68 extreme 4 gen3 + cheapest 8GB 1600Mhz kit that doesnt have huge heatspreaders and is CL9 or lower + choice of a mass of decent coolers

graphics card: either play the waiting game for the next gen cards, or spend the money on two of the cheaper versions of the cards. the twin frozr II and the gainward good edition are very good for the money.
whatever you do make sure that the card doesnt take up three expansion slots (like most high end asus ones) and dont go for the two cards in one solutions like the 6990 or the 590

cases is more down to personal preference. the majority of the more expensive (£75+) cases are all very good for airflow, so if you pick your top two or three cases based on looks, then run them by us and we'll makesure you dont get one of the rubbishy ones (antec 1200 springs to mind)

these are the usual OcUK recommendations for high end cases, but i would have a look around and see if theres anything you prefer the looks of before choosing one of these:

1 x Silverstone Fortress 2 FT02B-W Windowed Gaming Case - Black £229.99
1 x Corsair Graphite 600T Midi Tower Case - Limited Edition White £139.99
1 x Corsair Obsidian 650D Gaming Midi Tower - Black £134.99
1 x Silverstone Raven 2 RV02B Full Tower Case - Black £129.98
1 x Cooler Master HAF X Gaming Tower Case - Black (RC-942) £124.98
1 x Silverstone Raven 3 RV03B-W Full Tower Windowed Case - Black/Gold £109.98
1 x Lancool Dragon-Lord PC-K62 Mid Tower Case with Window - Black £82.99

i5 2500k, great all round and lovely for gaming

1600MHz ram would be my choice, according to stulid its the sweet spot for sandybridge, such as corsair xms3 would be my choice.

For a cooler, the one i would go for is the antec kuhler 620, lovely bit of kit, bit of a bugger to install though but worth it.

Graphics, good all rounder is the nvidia gtx 560ti, apparently it does well.

Corsair obsidian 650D absoloutely wonderfull case, i have done a build in it and it is a dream, that would be my choice

Cheers for all the Help, its very much appreciated.

I must admit the buying the mobo/cpu/ram etc does make a whole load of sense and i do like the idea of future proofing the system with a Gen 3 Mobo.

The biggest reason i was going for a pre built system is that overclocking is totally new to me and does seem a dark mythical art :) If i was to get the ASrock extreme 4 or even the extreme 7 which i fancy now ive been looking arround. do they have any systems or software that make OC'ing the system easy to understand? id probably back it up with 8gb/16gb of the ripjaw Cl8 style ram

cheers again all

The Z series mobos basically give you the overclocking ability of a P series with the integrated graphics of the H series.

You will find an auto overclock feature in the bios. Hardcore overclockers like to have more control over the settings but for most people the auto overclock is the way forward.

If i recall correctly our resident expert stulid achieved 4.4 Ghz from the auto OC when he did his i5 build a while back.

I was going to post on this thread earlier but reaper covered most of my points. The reason he said to get RAM without the aggressive heatspreaders (yes your ripjaws!) is that you can have problems making it all fit depending on the heatsink.

If you have 8GB (4X2) this won't really be an issue as you can use the two RAM slots furthest from the heatsink. If you go with the 16GB you will need all four RAM slots so need to consider the heatsink carefully or as reaper said buy RAM without the aggressive heatspreaders. Corsair XMS or Kingston genesis would be perfectly fine alternatives.
