Completely out of the loop...recommendations?

that fact that your i3(2 core) owns a i7(4 core 8 threads *stock*) states how pointless an upgrade for a cpu can be, what i was stating is that his 3.2ghz
q6600 will be more then good enough. Since i have a highly overclocked i5, had q6600 at 3gz, i know the difference. I bought an i5 (over an i7) it wasn't
because i coulden't afford an i7, it was because it was rendered pointless, as the performance in games wasn't apparent.

It doesn't state how pointless it can be at all, it proved that a chip costing less than half of the other can provide a big fps boost when overclocked. Overclocking the i7 to a similar level would evidently provide superior performance.

And the performance difference between an i5 and i7 in games can be apparent, if you're using crossfire u will notice a difference with high spec cards as the twin 8x lanes can be limiting.

Ha, why is your brother running an i7 at stock?

He ran it at stock so i could compare gaming results between mine and his, as i wanted to know whether despite mine having the higher clock if his i7 would come out on top.
