Ive got a Yamaha AV amp/reciever (RS-540 i think) on my tv downstairs (HD Sharp set). Now i want to connect my component cable from my Wii to the TV but the cable is too short to reach the tv, so i know i can connect it to the amp at the back as i have seen the component inputs to it, but i dont know how it will actually work and how i will go about getting the picture on the tv etc. Can anyone shed anylight on this?

Connect the amp to the TV with a component cable also. You might need to assign an audio input to a component input on the amp but other than that it simply acts as a switch.

Oh so id need a component cable from the tv to the amp, damn. Looks like i'm gonna have to buy one - Bit puzzled though as my brother connecting it up earlier and we dont have a cable from the tv to the amp

You need to connect the amp to the TV somehow. Some amps can convert the signals, for instance you can connect up component connections to the amp, but then S-video from amp to TV but you're probably best of using component all round.... in order to get a component signal from wii to TV you need to use component cables.
