Component Speaker Questions

Speaker cable, suddenly realised I need some to go between the speakers and crossover. What cable would you recommend?

How come the cable coming off the tweeters is about 3 inches long.

Oh, and if you watch that video, when I am adjusting the bass that middle number (it's a 1) can be changed between 1-4. What does it do?

there not much point getting mega expensive cable aslong as it oxygen free it do fine.

don't know but it's not that difficult to make it longer

thats most likely the width of the boost If you take the center frequency as 80hz thats where you get the most boost the width determines how many frequencies around it get boost aswell. 1 would only boost between 70-90hz where as 4 would go form 40-120hz.

Took me bloody ages to do this, started about 9 this morning, then stopped to help our builder lift some VERY heavy steel RSJ's into place. I could only just about lift in using both arms so when one of my hand's got trapped underneath, it was quite painful. Somehow I managed to lift it off just using my left arm, must have been an adrenaline thing? Anyway, I plodded back on with the car with my now crippled hand.

I made one small mistake, the tweeters do not sit in exactly the same place as each other as the door cards differ slightly due to the electric window switches (there are 4 on the drivers door).

If I mounted the tweeters lower they could have gone in the same place, however they sounded best where they are fitted now- so maybe not a mistake after all and just me being fussy with aesthetics.

The speakers sound excellent, I haven't been out driving yet so cannot tell you what they are like other than when stationary on my drive.

I used some of my company's home cinema cable I had left over from an install the other week as I was only doing short runs all inside each door. Worked fine as I expected.

What do you think?

Yes but my woodwork skills are the lose so they got binned. My friend is a carpenter so I am going to do some drawings and get him to knock me up some in exchange for a few pints.
 
Ahh, shame. I'm going to put my skills to the test and make some using my trusty Halfords jigsaw. Should be fun :o

So, do you have any sound deadening or are they just screwed straight to the door metal? Actually, you're using pods aren't you?
 
Tesla, I was looking at these components the other day.

What are your thoughts on them? I haven't bought a HU as of yet but I'm looking at the Pioneer/Alpine range at £150 mark area so it's a similar set up to yours.

Just wanted your input on these components.

I am really pleased with mine, they sounded a bit too bright so i knocked the treble to minus 1 via the headunit.

Other than that they are excellent. I got mine for £60 delivered off of ebay. Brand new etc.
 
After further listening the tweeter in the drivers door is distorting, even at low volumes. I think it's only at certain frequencies though (resonating?) as it's not on all songs.

Is there an easy way to diagnose the source of the fault.

I was just going to do it methodically, first make sure it's not the source- My mp3 cd's, then check the wiring is good and correct, swap the tweeters over, swap the crossovers over.

That should locate the fault or faulty component.
 
I also have a second problem, perhaps the two are related...?

Sometimes, when powering up the HU for the first time. i.e. When I get in the car the drivers side speaker is very very low volume. Barely audible.

I have confirmed this as when it happened I switched the balance to all over to the right and couldn't really hear anything.

Turning the volume up a fair bit makes it suddenly kick into life.

Any ideas? Perhaps the crossover is faulty?

I haven't had the time to have a look at it as I have been working flat out and leaving my tools at the job so haven't been physically able to take the door apart anyway.

The passenger side works 100% excellent all of the time!

P.S. I am pretty sure it's not the HU at fault as this never happened with the old speakers. One thing I havnt tried is fading it to the rear only (currently everything is coming out the front) to see if the rear drivers side speaker is effected the same way as the front- I will give that a go as I guess it will single out the HU. Doesn't have 4 seperate amps does it?

Hmmm, could be the crossover causing the distortion too.

I'd swap the crossovers and see if the passenger side speaker starts playing up.
