Just got my self a HDMI DVD player, it has both Component and HDMI but which offers the best image quality?

Thanks

I've found there to be no real difference in image quality. I've had both HDMI and component connected up to my 26" Sammy LCD TV and to be honest I actually preferred the picture that component gave me.

But yes I know a lot of people including myself who have found no real difference in image quality between the two.

To be honest I cant see any difference (even down to the quality of the cables which were approx £30 each) I am using componant at the moment due to having an input switcher built into my home cinema amp

I don't think you can upscale DVD's over component due to licenscing, only with HDMI so if that's what your player does then there's only one choice.

I dont think this is true, I have done exactly this between a Sammy hd850 and 32R41BDX, with hd850's remote you can flick between 576p, 720p and 1020i ( even though personally I cant tell much different between the last two)

Unless the screen upscales better than the DVD player. I would take my component player being upscaled by my screen over most upscaling players ive tried.

I do prefer the look of analogue outputs tho so i am biased i guess ;)

Apparently there is a differene in quality of HDMI leads.

I am unsure how this can be as all that is sent along them are some 0's and 1's.

Anybody care to enlighten me?

Good point, but there has to be a better reason why some charge £25 and others £60+ other than just better end connectors ( silver / gold)

Probably the same as the difference in quality between optical and digital coax leads - ie, just the physical quality of the connectors and cable. Worth buying more expensive to some extent, i find cheaper leads often work loose very quickly etc

Just got back from Comet, I asked what’s the best cable to use out of the two and he replied something like this.

Him "HDMI is the new scart, its going to be here for the next 35 years, we sell this one for £89.99 its gold plated and guarantied for two years"
Mam "It better be made from gold at that price"
Him "Scart just cant handle the data transferred using HDMI, its going to be around till you drop your clogs"

They didn’t have the LD DVD player I wanted so I went to Comet, I haven’t had chance to try the DVD player out yet because no cables at all where supplied so I’ll be going to Argos tomorrow for a HDMI cable for about £25.

Ive got an Ixos HDMI cable which was about £80 and a cheaper one and apart from the build quality you cant tell them apart, also ive tried both my DVD player and my Snazio with both Componant and HDMI and i realy cant tell any difference at all, infact id say the Snazio was better with componant but i think thats down to a firmware problem.

I agree with the above having brought a 2m QED hdmi cable and an unbranded cable of the same length I cannot see any difference between them image quality wise, although I am sure there would be a difference in cables of longer lengths where you will start to see artifacts apearing on the cheaper cable at say 5m but the dearer cable may be ok at lengths of 7m+

I honestly cannot tell the difference between ~£200 component cables spanning to my projectors, and home made ones using cat5e

Cables are a total farce :/

Well I get my video cables from this guy, he normal makes them to order on the component side. They are excellent, and very good prices.

Does HDMI as well.

Those £80 on the high street would be bought in for around £2 from China... Your paying for the packet and gold labels....Cables are a huge rip off in such places.

I no a guy who use to run a local dealership, sold Scart cables for £10, they were £39.99 in C or D just in a fancy packet, came from the same factory !..... He bought them in at a 1000 a time for 99 pence each.

One thing I dont like about componant ( unless its my tv a Sammy 32" R41BDX) is that there is no auto channel switching, ie when tv senses there is input on hdmi or scart it flicks to that input automatically) however with componant it doesnt

Otherwise I certainly cant see any difference between a half decent £30 hdmi cable and a £25 componant one
