They fade over time, are completely unrecyclable, and look like someone's trying to make outside look like inside. If you don't like painting then don't paint it.

Yeh that’s my point, if i don’t paint the fence every few years it looks hideous anyway and won’t last as long. Gets covered in the green moss and you can’t just give that a blast with the hose.

Each to their own I suppose, maint free is the way to go for me.

I haven't painted mine. All pressure treated timbers so protected. I'm not sure how much extra protection paint gives.

The problem with treating the fence is you need to keep doing it or it'll look awful... Mine has weathered a nice silvery colour
 
We inherited this metal fencing (not my pic but exactly the same).
If have preferred a nicer colour but it was here when we got the house

Its pretty rugged. And keeps chickens and dog safe. Doesn't move at all in the wind while neighbours fences collapsed.
