are there any good programes to compress a 350mb .avi to make it smaller? 200mb or so

use autogk

you can choose the filesize

the quality will obviously deteriorate the more you compress it

IIRC, you won't be able to compress it by much as AVI files are already compressed. Any program which rencodes the file will cause a loss of quality. Have you considered splitting the file in to 2 to fit? (assuming cd isn't an option)

how long is the video? is it a file from a home video camera ? (if so, it'll probably compress a lot more)

Avi files aren't compressed by default.

Just use virtual dub to compress it with x.264 and ogg audio and you probably wont even see a quality loss.

AVI's are heavily compressed by default, your best bet is to use winrar to split it if you need to move it in smaller chunks No loss of quality and it'l spit out whatever size chunks you tell it.

no they're not

avi's, per ce, are not compressed, as they are a container. the files inside the avi, *can* be, and usually are compressed - ie audio and video.

you'd be best of splitting the file using winrar as said above, but failing that, x264 and ogg reencoding in gordianknot is about the best option you have.

any idea what codecs the file uses?

ps
if reencoding to x264 and ogg, you'd be better using mkv as the container rather than avi :)
