Compressed Backups?

Hi

I'm currently backing up my media using Cobian Backup 11...what's the implication of compressing the Backup? Is there any increased potential for errors/loss of quality/problems? If it saves space it seems sensible, as the backup would only be used in the event of a HDD failure and wouldn't need to be immediately usable?

Also would there be any disadvantage to using the Windows option "Compress this drive to save disk space"?

Thanks

There shouldn't be any potential for loss/errors in the backup per se but you've got no guarantee that the backup could be read by anything other than the original software.

If it's media (ie music & video) that you're backing up then the source data will be compressed anyway so the benefit of compression in either the backup or within Windows would be minimal.

Ah ok - yes it's mainly video I'm backing up so in that case sounds like it's not worth the hassle if no big gains to be made. Cheers for the response.
