Having a tight budget i can either get-

1.8GHz Core2Duo
8800gts 320mb

or

2.4GHz Core2Quad
x1950pro

Next year i would upgrade the weaker component im just wondering if i should go with the better processor package or the better gfx card package.
Ultimately i want to play Crysis and UT3. See if the 8800gts 320mb will struggle with crysis il get gtx (in a long time :D).

Also i do a lot of photoshop/video editing work so im wondering if the 2 extra cores in the quad will be noticeably different?

Thanks for any feedback, Ben.

Well i dont think higly of the 8800GTS 320 since the lack of Memory will start to show in the upcoming months.

If your photshop and editing work is more important than gaming then go for the Quad Core/X1950 Pro.

Its not that the photoshop/editing work is my job or anything, just i enjoy using the programs and making my own videos. Hmm, any other suggestions?

Are the packages you use for photo/video editing coded to take advantage of quad CPUs? If so then I'd go with quad core and the X1950pro, it is hardly a slouch of a card anyway. :)

Cool, well im not sure tbh.

Does anybody know if the following programs make use of 4 cores?
  • Adobe Premiere Pro
  • Adobe After Effects 7
  • Adobe Lightroom
  • Adobe Photoshop CS2

Thanks.

even if the programs dont use all 4 cores.

Would it be true that photoshop for example would use 2 and i on the other screen (dual monitors) would have the interenet using another core?

Yes, you could do it like that easily. I don't know offhand how many cores Adobe software is coded for (I'd guess as many as you have for the pro packages) but you could use one of the cores for something else fine. :)
