Having trying to sort my life out the past year and buggering up my knee in Dec 09 , i've had some time to spare! So id thought ill just see what courses (online) i could do! i've been reading A+ Comptia book since last May (09) on and off and thought i needed more motivation so i looked online and found

http://www.homelearningcollege.com

Has anyone used these? or know anyone that has? Scam or any good?

To be honest, you're much better off just buying a couple of books off Amazon and learning that way and doing the exam yourself. These 3rd party companies are just there to cash in. Ive done the CompTIA Linux+ and they are easily doable with a few weeks preparation / self study.

As above, just get the book online, its all you need. There are practice exams online too.

Right thanks guys! Anyone have and recs for books and websites for practice exams?

i already have this book which i got last year.

CompTIA A+ Certification All-in-One Exam Guide, Sixth Edition (Comptia A+ Certification All-In-One Exam Guide, (Exams 220-)

Any idea if the A+ exams are going to change soon?

That the Mike Meyers book? Maybe try the Mike Meyer's A+ Certification Passport as well.

I had the Sec+ passport book and liked it so this one could be good too :)

I think they just changed to A+ 2009, tbh the A+ is very simple, things like system restore, msconfig, fairly basic the most advanced thing you touch on is the OSI model, i have heard good things about Myers books although i didn't use them, i wouldn't personally advice you to get to bogged down with the A+, save your energy for another cert, like the MCSE, MCSA, CCNA, or MCDST.

A+ is Very simple mate, done it last year, best way is to get a few books on the subject, read then a few times and book and sit both assesments (601 + 602 i think i did) £70 odd per test, and most colleges cater for this.

I shall look into the ones you listed the CCNA is at my local college but its 2k + for 2 year course which i cant afford.

Trying to get into IT for a new job / career so i think A+ could be a starting point

Note that the MCSE and MCSA (server 2003) are being phased out and replaced with MCTS / MCTIP (server 2008) although you find that server 2003 is very similar to 2008 in most respects.

Would the Linux+ thingy help at all when applying to a LAMP type role?

I got these both in 2008, I found them really easy, if you have some idea about computers I think you'll find it a walk over. I practiced the tests online for a week before the exam, I think they were what helped the most.

books are about £60 are they?

Not if you shop around on the jungle site, ive bought 2nd hand official MS press books, for MCDST in brand new condition complete with exam discount vouchers.

Cant remember exactly what i paid, but it was significantly cheaper than brand new from a book shop, and the books were 'as new' condition.
