Even still...... well maybe im over sensitive, im a bit of a armed forces fan boy granted but what they may lack in social skills they more than make up for with courage and other smarts
its not a dig at armed forces, its just a simple case of this lifestyle attracts a certain type personality... the majority of my "collegues" are complete *****, but we love each other for it!:D

Thats bang out of order mate. I want to know what statistics or facts or any real proof you have of this to back your mindless statement up. Disgraceful.

I have worked and lived with many members of the forces for a few years now...

and courage?! What is this thing you speak of? For a forces fanboy you seem to know little about how many whining, swerving, selfish douchebags that make up our ranks.

I know! Bloody disrespectful! Doesn't everyone know that they are all heroes? The way people treat heroes nowadays is disgusting.

I think it's just a case of when you stick a bunch of young adults in a male dominent enviroment for a length of time and put them through a load of **** they'll always behave like we do. :)

I don't think we all have that courage, but we all aspire and probably believe that we would be ok doing what people in the armed forces (at least those on the ground) do.

Having said that, some of us object to their activities, myself included, and are therefore unsupportive of soldiers at war, and consequently will never really consider it an acceptable thing to do.

Will this be paid? And if not, who is going to pay for their bills?
I don't understand how wiping old farts bottoms would benefit me.
Also I was taught all those things at school, in PHSE. Also had cooking lessons as well.

It won't go anywhere and from tuition fees alone, leaving the financial apocalypse aside, the older generations have ****ed the younger generations over enough already. Everyone 40+ if you would kindly just keep quiet and your heads down until you're all dead and gone so you can't do anymore damage, that'd be great.

You know, you are going to at some point, have to face up to the harsh realities of life. Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but soon and for the rest of your life.

Or at least once you've finished work at McDonalds.

Hmm would be really crappy to start forcing that on people (unless there was a real pressing need) who are in the upper end of that age bracket many of whom will be well into an established career, family, etc.

Gotta be honest tho I don't think it would be a bad idea for long term unemployed to do a year in something like that within reason.

Young, so anywhere between 18 and late 30's/early 40's? Some of my seniors still haven't grown up I'm sure :p.

I'm not in favour. We have one of the best trained armed forces in the world, despite severe cutbacks. I'm very proud of and grateful to the people who voluntarily step forward and become a part of that. I wouldn't want to see them devalued to being simple babysitters for the yobs we have in this country.

They have this in some smaller European counties. I worked with a guy from denmark who was called into service, i think they have a lottery.

The training they put you through isn't just firing a gun, running and shouting yes sir etc. It specialised training that is well regarded in Danish society. The system is deigned so there is minimal interruption to education and uni was waiting once he'd finished.

He loved it and made good friends, had good "life experiences" etc. It's one hell of a gap year.

A professional armed forces that is being cut and a part time force being increased to cover the cuts, national service would help increase the TA portion. I'd guess they wouldn't be integrated anyway, considering 1 year isn't really long enough to train and then send to war.

its both pointless and unnecessary... why spend money on something like that when defence cuts are already being made - increasing numbers in the TA doesn't require compulsory national service

I'd hope if you're already doing something then that can be integrated into the national service, however of you're sat at home doing nothing like a quarter of young people then it gives you the option of doing something useful, to occupy your time, give you new skills and make you more employable. I would have loved to do something like this a couple of years ago when I had nothing to do because I couldn't find a job.

well make it voluntary then - or compulsory for people who are claiming job seekers benefits and haven't found a job after X years....

for lots of other people its just going to screw with their careers... some imaginary workaround to integrate jobs into it isn't going to prevent that... certainly a good way of encouraging highly skilled people to leave the country too - 1st class degree, complete masters, completed PhD... drat now aged 25 and have 1 year left to complete national service... forget about moving into a post doc position and working on cutting edge research you've got to do some charity work or military service.... alternatively move to California, Switzerland and pursue lucrative startup job there instead of staying under a regressive regime in the UK because some conservatives are still jerking off over what it was like in the 1950s...

if you were thinking that perhaps the post doc research would count somehow because you might deem it useful then there is another can of worms over what can and can't count... the whole thing would become a bureaucratic nightmare as there are plenty of roles out there you'd need to cover - anyone who's a non-retard would essentially find loop holes

Its not even clear what problem this would attempt to fix or how it would be beneficial in the majority of cases.
