Computer build immediately turns off

Thank you all for all your help - I am writing this from the culprit of the origin of this thread, and all appears to be dandy again. The long CMOS reset by removing the mobo's battery appears to have been what fixed it, so the suspicion of the CMOS reset button not quite doing the proper job appears to have been well founded.

Many thanks for giving your time and expertise once again; I very much appreciate it.

Cheers,
Hugh

hughtrimble, while you had probs with the pc starting, did you try another graphics card and did it work?

Your initial symptoms sound very similar to my issue, I replaced my 8800GTS 512 with an Asus 7970 Matrix (from here) and it worked great for several months. But then I started getting the same split second power and off symptoms. The old 8800 and the MSI 7850OC (from here for my better half at Xmas) will both start up the pc fine.

Hi UTmaniac,

The GPU was quickly discounted as the cause of the problem - the issue of rapid turn-off remained with the GPU removed.
I didn't like the idea of the GPU being the issue due to the cost of the things! Fortunately it wasn't the issue, and the system is back to running smoothly after the long CMOS reset.

Good to hear your issue was also resolved.

Cheers,
Hugh

Ah ok thanks, looks like our issues may have different causes.

My issue with the 7970 Matrix is not resolved and I'm running out of ideas of what to try before I approach the customer service section, I've now had to downgrade to my 8800, after finally installing the 7850OC and Blu-Ray player in my better half's pc yesterday.

I've tried...
Bios reset
Removing CMOS battery for >60mins
Swapping PSUs
Removing old graphics drivers using DDU before switching to the Matrix
Using a single 6+2 pin cable with two plugs on it
Using two of the above cables (which is how it worked for ~4 months)
Changing which modular outputs I connect the above cables to in the Corsair RM850
Moving the bios switch on the Matrix
Using the "reset" button on the Matrix

The only other thing I can think of to try is to put my Matrix into someone else's pc who lives local, but I know nobody around here with a suitable pc to give this a try.

This looks like it's worth its own thread UTmaniac (or have you previously posted one, but to no avail?).

I really can't help with your issue, as I am a complete novice at this computer build malarkey; my apologies!

This thread is now likely 'old news' given the OP issue was resolved, so your problem is probably not getting the coverage it otherwise would be. Have you tried posting a thread of your issues before?
