Computer constantly freezing

Hi all,

I've posted before about this but recently its got out of hand.

I use the computer mainly for fs2004 and fsx and some 3d's max stuff but the computer is constantly freezing (cant ctrl-alt-del or anything and have to use the re-start button on the computer)

Here is the speck:

Intel Quadcore Q9550 2.83GHz Processor
XFX 750iSLi Motherboard
6 Gig DDR2 800MHZ RAM
Seagate 300Gig SATA Hatd Drive
Nvidia Geforce GTX 280 (1 Gig DDR3) Grafix Card
Antec 900 Ultimate Gamers Case
22X DVD Rewriter
Windows 7 Home Premium (Genuine)
Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse
650W PSU

Any help would be appreciated as I cant now do any work on the computer.

I've checked the temps on both cpu and gpu and they all seem fine with max temp on the gtx280 only around 52.

Do you think that the psu is not powerful enough at 650w? The computer is almost unusable now except for internet browsing.!!

Thanks

Terry

Check for the above.

What is the make of your PSU?

It may be software/driver related but for now we'll work on the theory that it's a mostly hardware...

For now clear the CMOS and load optimised defaults and then run everything at stock (if clocked) and unplug all peripherals that are not required and any superfluous HDDs and then see what happens.

Also run memtest from a bootable ISO and see what results you get.

If you're still getting freezes - you will need to run a skeleton set up to test your rig properly.

Thanks for reply.The psu is:

High Power Plus 650W

Model: Hp-650-G14C

Here is a screenshot of the task manager, looks pretty normal:

I have not overclocked anything and here is a pic of temps which again seem fine:

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the area but how do I clear cmos?

Couldn't get memtest to boot but I ran the Win 7 memory test and it was fine

Cheers

That might be your problem. I would recommend getting a new PSU. If not to fix this, to stop any future problems.

Also if you can re install your OS. I had similar problems a few days ago and a new Win 7 install has cured it.

EDIT: Sorry read above post first - i meant to add the following to that post.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the area but how do I clear cmos?

I can't find your manual on the XFX site - but if your friend looks in the manual it should explain the process.

It's just a case of moving a jumper or touching two pins with a screwdriver with the sytsem unplugged. It should be labled CLR CMOS or similar...

Or he could simply remove the battery for 10 minutes - again unplug the system.

You need to make the dvd/cd drive the first bootable device in the BIOS - and you will need to run it for at least a few hours. But i would still try testing the system without the 5300 installed even if it passes.

Thanks lads for the replies. I will first try removing the memory stick and see how things go. I agree with the psu, I think that 650w is a bit small, any suggestions for a decent psu that would safeguard me for the future? A compelte noob at these sort of things, just need the computer to be working without freezing.! Hopefully I can get this sorted as the longer the computer is not working the less money I can earn! I need it for this: www.eiresim.com

The Psu is a concern as it's not a recognised brand. A branded (corsair, xfx, bequiet etc) psu rated at 600 watts would be fine. But the freezing is most likely to be caused by the odd number of memory modules you're using. You have a dual channel mobo running with 3 modules.. One of which is very different to the others.

How much do you want to spend?

Just thought I'd update the thread.

By chance I changed the drivers on the gtx280 to old ones (almost 2 years old) and the computer has stopped freezing. It's like a new computer. Delighted but I just bought a new psu and it's still in the box, might try sell it. I thought it was the psu that was the problem

My new build has the exact same problem, I can still move the mouse around and stuff but everything stops responding. It was less frequent but now it happens almost as soon as I finish logging in.

Interesting to hear that it was your graphics drivers that caused the problems as I'm using an ancient graphics card (2.0 WEI rating, single slot, no extra power required) while I wait for my new one to arrive. The new one should arrive tomorrow so I'll be able to see if that fixes the problem!
