Hi All,

I'm looking to replace my current Argos desk as I now have two monitors, console and a pair of speakers on my desk and the length is not long enough.

My only requirements is that it must be sturdy, solid and the desk doesn't scratch or leave any marks on easily.

I have been looking at Ikea builds on the forum such as,

Linnmon table top + Adils legs (Doesn't seem to be sturdy?)

Kitchen worktop + Alex drawer unit (No way to secure the worktop onto the drawers?)

Malm desk

What are your thoughts and suggestions?

Cheers guys

I've just gone for a Malm and it's pretty sturdy, I had to remove a piece of wood to keep my computer in the cupboard though, and drilled holes in the back with a hole saw to put cables through.

I've got the Alex / Linnmon / Adils combo and it's pretty sturdy. Whacked some Stubbarp legs into the bottom of a Lack shelf for a monitor riser.

I wouldn't say that the desk is unstable or not very sturdy, but then again I wouldn't fancy dancing on top of it either. Looks nice, does the job and wasn't too expensive.

+1 for the GERTON, It's more of a standard desk size (155x75). I find a lot of the IKEA tabletops are too long + thin.

Solid wood, nice size, and just stain it and screw some legs onto it and you've got a great desk.

I think I'm going with the Malm desk, if your available can you take a picture of the storage unit with your computer inside please so I know how it will look and the wood you removed.

+1 for the MALM.
How long is the desk excluding the storage unit and is the desk easy to scratch or leave marks?

I bought a Maja Mobel desk. It was awesome. Very sturdy and nice and big. Not using it now though so it's just sat there.

I'll measure mine when I get back home.

I bought it second hand and it's in great condition still, couple scratches (I use it for graphic work as well, stenciling etc.).

We have this exact setup and it is more than upto the job we currently have 2 x 24" monitors sat on it and a 27" iMac.

We did buy the Lack wall shelf with the intention of adding some 10cm legs to it and using it as a monitor shelf but we changed our minds and use it as a shelf above the desk.

I went down the alex route and simply screwed the workspace to the drawers, rock solid and still looking awesome, receives lots of compliments

Have you considered a mount for the monitors as that would get them off the desk and leave more room for the other items.

If that isn't a viable option, then depending on what you already have you might be able to get a longer desk from argos, but if you want some inspiration then I would suggest going to the techsource on youtube and going through the setup wars playlist (I would suggest you avoid the worst setup editions) as a majority of the setups use items from ikea (there's also a video on that channel for the best desks).

All these tabletops linked have horrible depths to them. :(

I'd still use this: http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/50106773/

Proper, solid wood. The only hassle is you need to stain it yourself.

In fairness that's only 12cm deeper than the standard worktops being mentioned (75cm as opposed to 63.5cm), I can't come close to reaching the back of mine without leaning over.

Can't say see a deeper width being of any benefit, unless I was longsighted!

Each to their own though :)

I ended up snapping this off because I really couldn't be bothered to take it all apart again, it just sits between the drawer and the cupboard door.

The drawer only just fits above the computer case, the space between the drawer and the bottom of the cupboard is 35cm.

If you don't mind, can you also measure the thickness of the desk please.

I was thinking of going down the Alex route with storage unit on the left for my computer and drawer unit on the right for bits and bobs however they don't do the storage unit in Black as White doesn't match my room.

I've used the Alex drawers & Linnmon table top combo for the past year or so but I've just bought the Karlby top (little shorter but a bit more depth than the Linnmon) to replace it.

Karlby worktop material is better than Linnmon?

Your case height is 458mm and mine is 440mm so that will fit no problem with the drawer however the depth of my case is 550mm compared to yours 458mm, will I be able to fit my case all in?

Also, the back of the storage unit, can I leave that board out so heat can escape?

Check ebay out, you'll often come across people that are selling off old furniture from call centres and the likes.

I got an awesome L shaped desk and a chest of drawers for £60 delivered, he even carried it upstairs and put it together :p

Looks fantastic, been considering a similair setup. Need a fairly deep worktop though as I want to put the case on it. At 25kg its pretty heavy and also very deep. Sitting under my current desk my aio coolers radiator is just recycling expelled air back into the case, that and I cant access the usb ports on the top front of the case.

Also needs to hold a 27" monitor and a 32" tv.

If you don't mind, can you also measure the thickness of the desk please.

The Ikea page is quite accurate ha, 1400x650mm.

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80214158/

Thickness is 50mm.

My case is watercooled @ about 35KG of weight that used to sit on the side with the drawer + my monitor and I have sat on it and it held without any issues.

32", 27" + a case you'll need something with some decent length, 1400mm can do 2x24" plus a slim case.
