Computer Desk

I have the Alex kitchen counter top setup and have to say I love it also! So much space and nice and sturdy....if you have to do...err other things on it ;)

Also, I 1up'd it with another floating shelf style thingy from Ikea for my screen, looks tidy. I'll get a pic up in an hour or so once I'm home.

Karlby worktop material is better than Linnmon?

I hope so! It's also a bit thicker (3.8 v 3.4), a lot heavier (~30kg v ~11kg) and has a thin (~3.4mm) layer of solid walnut around the outside so I'm hoping it'll be a little more secure and robust than the Linnmon (mine's quite badly scratched now).

I think Will Gill has the Karlby in his picture (I'm sure it was his picture I saw in another thread and loved it!) - might be worth asking his thoughts on the worktop :) I have the two sets of Alex drawers as he also does, but I just picked up an Alex storage unit which I think will replace one.

I got the tabletop with the Adils legs and although they support the weight of two monitors/speakers. They don't feel 100% secure. I do love that setup with the tabletop screwed into the drawers on either side, although we currently rent and I just know it would be a complete bitch to move that.

Is the Karlby solid wood?

Still sticking with my opinion of the GERTON as the best because it's actually 100% solid wood. No chance of that thing ever bowing due to the weight of monitors on poles, for example. With particle board ones I'd fear that a BEKANT frame would be needed over the years. :p

I also think the other desks are too long if you (although very specific) ever plan on setting up decent bookshelf speakers. While I'm not running the GERTON atm (planning to soon), my setup has this:

Even at 160cm I think the 'triangle' sweet spot is a bit on the wide side, so a 180cm desk would be insanity, especially with the reduced depth on top of that.

The Ikea page is quite accurate ha, 1400x650mm.

http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/80214158/

Thickness is 50mm.

My case is watercooled @ about 35KG of weight that used to sit on the side with the drawer + my monitor and I have sat on it and it held without any issues.

32", 27" + a case you'll need something with some decent length, 1400mm can do 2x24" plus a slim case.
Do you know if I can remove the back board of the storage unit so heat can escape from my computer?

I'm considering between the Karlby worktop + Alex drawer unit and Malm desk but the Karlby is 186cm in length which is quite long.

Your current setup is Linnmon top and Adils legs? If so, I did think of going that route but my computer would be on carpet and I prefer a storage unit so I can tuck all cables away or maybe put my computer inside it if possible.

My current setup isn't a Linnmon top. It's a Steelcase DOUE desk. The Linnmon top is another one I dislike - it's too long and not wide enough. None of the recommended tops you've had would be similar to my one (except the gerton) as they're all longer and thinner. Depending on your use, this could be good, or bad.

In my particular scenario, it would be god awful due to the bookshelf speaker placement which I illustrated with a picture.

Damn that's a good idea with the 2 drawer units and a nice top on it. I may just do that in the future with my own custom furniture. Double bonus is that Natural Stone and Timber is opposite my work.

Apologies for the slight necro, but moving house soon and need new...everything.

Went to Ikea yesterday just to have a wander. I was more or less set on the malm desk based on the look of it etc., but seeing it in person yesterday, was underwhelmed. Main reasons being it felt quite low (indeed, most of the desks there did) and the black-brown colour one looked like that any scratches etc. would show very obviously. The finish also left me desiring a bit more...wouldn't mind spending a bit (not tons more, but up to an extra £100 or so) if I got something a lot better. The design of it was the main feature that attracted me to it.

Was wondering if anyone else felt the same/had concerns? Is the feeling really low thing down more to the chair? I'm not a big guy ;p (5'5)

I am a fan of buying a big worktop and fitting it to the wall, In my new house I have a 3 meter worktop from a local trade shop for £45, Then fit it to the wall, And for storage I have a Drawer Unit from Ikea (Alex)

Another vote for Breakfast bar, and the ALEX drawers

Its supported with brackets around the edge and plenty strong enough.
Bought the Beech worktop (3m x 960mm depth) from Mr Chippy as recommended by someone on here and just used Danish oil to finish.

When i get the new monitor i will cut up what is left and add some height at the back with the CAPITA stand offs. Nearly finished the room but good enough to start gaming on for the moment.

Sorry to bump an old thread!
Just ordered the 246cm Karlby work surface and three Alex drawer units, all in oak effect.
Going to make a double desk for me and the wife to have a PC each eventually
