Ok my desktop is currently comprised of 200 icons spread over 2 monitors. These are stored in 8 different fences to keep them organised. But atm its getting all too much lol. I never seam to lose icons, only gain them. In the past I've experimented with folderising stuff instead of fences, using docks, sidebars, even using the windows start menu! So my question is this, what do you guys do? And what do you guys recommend? I can provide screenies if needed, and wouldnt mind some of yours too :)

Definitely screenie plz! :D

I personally use a folder structure in my documents for my documents and in the start menu for programs. The only things i tend to keep on the desktop will be current work that i'm focusing all of my attention on :)

EDIT: My desktop atm, i'm doing some Visual Studio work so all of my active files are stored in my docs..Not a great example really, but I like mah desktop, nice and minimal..

Oh gawds. Just spent ages whiteing out anything incriminating / identifying lol. Also theres so much rubbish there! I'll add the pic to the first post.

Tbh, all of those program/game shortcuts could easily be in the start menu. Just hit win-key, type the name and hit enter. If you're looking to economise on screen space, that's a good place to start.. Seen a lot of insane desktop management though, so i'm intrigued by what people come into this thread with :)

also i see pics inside ur folderz :D

Yah but you cant see what they are :p

For all your games, can't you put them all into Steam? as shortcuts kinda thing and then use that as a sort of hub for all your games? or maybe the games folder on Windows?

I think I remember doing that when I used to use it and had games installed.

Categorised Start Menu, and Essentials on Task bar (Browers/email etc). I literally have nothing what so ever on my desktop.

Edit..

Nice Pronzz folder. :P

Erm why not start with moving all your documents / pictures and music into the folders that exist on the Windows 7 Start Menu.

Then see which games are in your Games folder on the start menu and get rid of the desktop icons. If there isn't an Icon in the games Folder just drag the desktop icon into it.

Everything's in the Start Menu.

Press Win key, and start typing a name of something. It's quicker 99% of the time than either 1) browsing through the Start Menu or 2) minimising everything, looking on the desktop for an icon, double-clicking it.

The Start menu search thing that they introduced with Vista is one of the best things they've introduced recently into Windows.

mines stardock but i think there are others, can have as many catagories in as you like [can even have docks up the side of the screen etc, the icons can be set to pixel size, as can the actual bar, you can put it in the middle of the screen, anywhere really, i also have some side docks on both monitors

no my desktop isnt all black, and where the task bar is is where the 2 monitors meet, the dock on the left of right hand screen is same utility but different style

edt, i have icons like my comp, blu ray drive, windows drive etc, docs, music, etc, fairly organised but accessible, some of those icons are custom that i did
